Samid and partner Raphael Ouzan, a?financial data security expert, set out to build a system that would harness ?collective consumer knowledge? and allow credit card users to share this kind of information with each other. BillGuard also monitors other complaint-related websites and social media services for signs that a company might be misbehaving.

Customer surveys show that about 90 percent of credit card users fail to scan their bills carefully each month, so a proactive alert system is essential, he said.

To see if the system really works, we asked Samid to share with us 10 potentially problematic charges that BillGuard warned consumers about in the first quarter of 2012.

Then we contacted the 10 companies involved to see if the warnings were warranted.?We?re publishing 9 of the 10 here ? the tenth requires additional investigation.

BILLGUARD: ?FreeShipping.com offers to supply you with free shipping from various merchants for a flat monthly fee. The problem is that FreeShipping works with multiple third-party merchant affiliates who?unknowingly?subscribe you to a membership. During the checkout process with the third-party merchant there is a small button at the bottom of the page, usually opted in by default, and unless you notice it and opt-out, your financial data is passed on to FreeShipping and you are a monthly paying member.?

RESPONSE: Thomas Caporaso, FreeShipping.com CEO, said BillGuard?s description of the service was ?simply untrue.?

?There is no way that we can collect any billing information from the user without them physically entering it into our member registration form,? he said. ?When people register for FreeShipping.com, they must enter all of their information into our signup page, including their credit card number and billing address. The terms of the offer are presented clearly, immediately next to where they would enter their credit card information, explaining that they may cancel at any time within the 30 days with no charges to their card, and that after the 30 days are over, the subscription converts into a paid membership at $12.97 per month. They are also required to check a box agreeing to the terms of service before we are able to process their trial.? Lastly they may cancel at any time after that with no additional billing from us.?

Many of the complaints generated against FreeShipping.com involve third-party websites sharing consumer information with the service. Caporaso said those consumers are also informed of the cost.

?Regardless if the member goes directly to Freeshipping.com or through a third-party merchant the enrollment process is the same as outlined,? he said.

There are many complaints about FreeShipping.com across the web, such as at this page. To support its complaint about Freeshipping, BillGuard also pointed to this lawsuit against the firm, and noted that there are 341 complaints about the company on ComplaintsBoard.com, and 66 complaints on Scambook.com.

BILLGUARD: ?A free sample of a miracle diet product!?Unfortunately, as some of our users learned, unless you call them and request to opt out within a few days of placing your free trial order you are sent a second package for the pricey sum of $75. The main reason most users do not call to cancel their subscription is that they never knew they were enrolled in one to begin with. Cellulean requests your financial information during the checkout process of the free trial supposedly to cover the shipping costs. What they are actually after is your financial information so they may bill you monthly for their product.?

RESPONSE: An operator at Cellulean?s customer service center told us to write an e-mail to CEO Patrick Leddy. He sent this response:?

"Our website and offer meets all legal guidelines set forth by the Federal Trade Commission and the Electronic Retailing Association (ERA). In fact, we place our terms and conditions in full-size readable font right next to the ordering section, instead of hiding them at the bottom of the page (which is the FTC/ERA requirement). ?We then go another step further, beyond the requirements, by placing a check box next to the order button, which states: "I am 18 years of age and agree to the Terms and Conditions". ?The customer is not allowed to check out of the website unless this box has been checked. ?Furthermore, we give the customer two direct purchase options, instead of just the free trial offer, allowing them to choose if they want to enter into the agreement, or simply buy the product with no terms or conditions.?When a complaint has been made by a customer, stating they were shocked when they were billed, and never knew they enrolled themselves into such a program, we have to scratch our heads in wonderment. ?This is a classic case where the customer attempts to pass blame on to the manufacturer, when in fact they entered themselves into a legal binding agreement - with their full knowledge and consent beforehand. ?Customers are not forced to place an order, they do so freely on their own willingness, and should be accountable for their choices." ? ? ? ?

BILLGUARD: ?Redstarworldwear?is an online retailer of sunglasses and watches. They send out gift certificates ?worth? $500 to unsuspecting consumers informing them that they have won a special prize. Joyful of the prize, the unsuspecting customer then goes to Redstarworldwear website and purchases as much as he can using his newly minted gift card. During the end of the checkout process the customer is informed that there is a?separate?shipping and handling fee that cannot be deduced from the gift cards value. The customer then enters his financial information in order to pay for the (that), which turns out to be a costly 9 percent of the order value. We were interested how valuable these supposed $500 gift certificates actually were so we had a look around eBay, they can be had for under $2!?

So we were surprised to learn of several complaints from our customers regarding unwanted charges from them. After investigating the matter we learned that Blizzard enables a phone billing option called?PaymentOne PhoneBill. This billing option allows you to pay for Blizzard games and subscriptions by merely entering your phone number information in the account settings tab. Obviously, given the young age and lack of credit card availability to some its users, this option has a high potential for unwanted and unauthorized purchases by young family members.?

Researchers find evidence of banned antibiotics in poultry products

In a joint study, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Arizona State University found evidence suggesting that a class of antibiotics previously banned by the U.S. government for poultry production is still in use. Results of the study were published March 21 in Environmental Science & Technology.

The study, conducted by the Bloomberg School's Center for a Livable Future and Arizona State's Biodesign Institute, looked for drugs and other residues in feather meal, a common additive to chicken, swine, cattle and fish feed. The most important drugs found in the study were fluoroquinolones?broad spectrum antibiotics used to treat serious bac-terial infections in people, particularly those infections that have become resistant to old-er antibiotic classes. The banned drugs were found in 8 of 12 samples of feather meal in a multstate study. The findings were a surprise to scientists because fluoroquinolone use in U.S. poultry production was banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2005.

This is the first time investigators have examined feather meal, a byproduct of poultry production made from poultry feathers, to determine what drugs poultry may have received prior to their slaughter and sale.

The annual per capita human consumption of poultry products is approximately 100 lbs, greater than that of any other animal- or vegetable-derived protein source in the U.S. To satisfy this demand, each year, the U.S. poultry industry raises nearly 9 billion broiler chickens and 80 million turkeys, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A large percentage of the fresh weight of these animals is inedible?an estimated 33 percent for chickens, for example?and is recycled for other uses, including feather meal.

The rendering industry, which converts animal byproducts into a wide range of materials, processes poultry feathers into feather meal, which is often added as a supplement to poultry, pig, ruminant, and fish feeds or sold as an "organic" fertilizer. In a companion study, researchers found inorganic arsenic in feather meal used in retail fertilizers.

"The discovery of certain antibiotics in feather meal strongly suggests the continued use of these drugs, despite the ban put in place in 2005 by the FDA," said David Love, PhD, lead author of the report. "The public health community has long been frustrated with the unwillingness of FDA to effectively address what antibiotics are fed to food animals."

A primary reason for the 2005 FDA ban on the use of fluoroquinolones in poultry production was an alarming increase in the rate of the fluoroquinolone resistance among Campylobacter bacteria. "In recent years, we've seen the rate of fluoroquinolone re-sistance slow, but not drop," noted study co-author Keeve Nachman, PhD, Farming for the Future Program Director at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. "With such a ban, you would expect a decline in resistance to these drugs. The continued use of fluoroquinolones and unintended antibiotic contamination of poultry feed may help ex-plain why high rates of fluoroquinolone-resistant Campylobacter continue to be found on commercial poultry meat products over half a decade after the ban."

In the U.S., antibiotics are introduced into the feed and water of industrially raised poutry, primarily to make them grow faster, rather than to treat disease. An estimated 13.2 million kg of antibiotics were sold in 2009 to the U.S. poultry and livestock industries, which represented nearly 80 percent of all antibiotic sales for use in humans and animals in the U.S. that year.

In conducting the study, researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Arizona State University analyzed commercially available feather meal samples, acquired from six U.S. states and China, for a suite of 59 pharmaceuticals and personal care products. All 12 samples tested had between 2 and 10 antibiotic residues. In addition to antimicrobials, 7 other personal care products, including the pain reliever ac-etaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol), the antihistamine diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in Benadryl) and the antidepressant fluoxetine (the active ingredient in Prozac), were detected.

Researchers also found caffeine in 10 of 12 feather meal samples. "This study reveals yet another pathway of unwanted human exposure to a surprisingly broad spectrum of prescription and over the counter drugs," noted study co-author Rolf Halden, PhD, PE, Co-Director of the Center for Health Information & Research, and Associate Director of the Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University.

When researchers exposed several strains of E. coli bacteria to the concentrations of antibiotics found in the feather meal samples, they also discovered the drug residues could select for resistant bacteria. "A high enough concentration was found in one of the samples to select for bacteria that are resistant to drugs important to treat infections in humans," noted Nachman.

"We strongly believe that the FDA should monitor what drugs are going into animal feed," urged Nachman. "Based on what we've learned, I'm concerned that the new FDA guidance documents, which call for voluntary action from industry, will be ineffectual. By looking into feather meal, and uncovering a drug banned nearly 6 years ago, we have very little confidence that the food animal production industry can be left to regulate it-self."

'Survivor: One World': Kimsanity Begins!

Bridal-shop owner Kim Spradlin emerges as the season's front-runner to win in the latest episode of 'Survivor.'

Big moves require big risks — a fact that 29-year-old bridal-shop owner and former Salani tribe member Kim Spradlin knows all too well.

But for her, the risks paid off: On last night's "Survivor: One World," Kim deftly positioned two male allies against each other, leading to a stunning blindside that removed banker Michael Jefferson from the game for good. As a consequence of Michael's ousting, the "One World" men find themselves at a complete numbers disadvantage, down two players against the former Salani women.

The biggest result of all of this, however, is the emergence of Kim as the dominant player on "Survivor." As the person who engineered the return of the women's alliance over the men, and as one of two players in possession of a hidden immunity idol, Kim is virtually peerless in the strategy department. Though she appears to be the front-runner to win the game at this point, Kim's path to the finish line isn't set in stone: She still has several hard choices ahead of her, including the possible ousting of her closest ally, medical sales rep Chelsea Meissner, another major threat to take home the million bucks.

Once again, we're joined by two-time "Survivor" contestant and regular commentator Rob Cesternino to talk about the latest episode, including Kim's awesome rise to power and the continued ridiculous commentary from 64-year-old plastic surgeon Greg "Tarzan" Smith.

MTV: Rob, I saw you tweet a prediction last night: that the big scramble leading up to tribal council and through the vote would be the best 20 minutes of the season so far. I think you were onto something.

Rob Cesternino: I thought this was one of the more exciting episodes. This was going to be the episode where Kim was going to pull off setting herself up to win the game, or Troyzan and Jay were going to figure things out and blow it up — and that did not happen. I am so impressed with the way Kim's playing the game. I don't see anybody standing in her way right now.

MTV: For a few weeks now, she's been my favorite player in the game. This week was huge for her, but also extremely risky — one false move and it all would have blown up. As somebody who has played a few times and is hip to the strategy game, I'd love to hear your read on Kim.

Cesternino: You know, I think I have a "Survivor" crush on Kim. I'm experiencing Kimsanity right now. [Laughs] She's playing the game so well. I'm hard-pressed to think of a female player who has played as dominating a game as she has that's not really based on using any sort of sexuality to advance her cause. She's just looking at the players on the board, openly manipulating people. ... She knows what she wants for the finals, and she's doing what she's got to do to get there. I don't know if going to the final three with Chelsea and Sabrina is necessarily her best setup, but she knows what she wants better than I do.

MTV: The thing is, she's playing excellently, but she's also playing aggressively. Historically, that style of playing can create a very bitter jury.

Cesternino: That's fair to say, that she's playing overly aggressive, and we'll see if that comes back to bite her in the butt. But most of these guys, like Jay and Troyzan, do they even know what hit them? Do they even know that Kim was the one calling the shots? I mean, they voted with her last night! That's what's so devastating, is that Troyzan and Jay went with it. Somebody in their alliance went home, but they voted for Michael. That's why it's so bad for those guys, and that's why it was such a great job on Kim's part. I just don't see how after all of that, that Troyzan and Jay went along with the plan to vote out one of the men. That was so brilliant, how Kim told Troyzan that Michael wanted him out of the game...

MTV: The ego is a very fragile thing!

Cesternino: Sometimes, on "Survivor," when someone is giving you a piece of information — just like when you're doing research on the Internet, and you end up on some crazy site that you've never heard of — you can't take the information too seriously. You have to question the source of who is talking to you on "Survivor." You have to ask, "If I believe this story, what does this person have to gain by me believing this story?" You have to question where the information is coming from. Not that I always did that on "Survivor," for the record! It's easier to say that when watching the show on TV and talking to you on the phone than it is while playing the game.

MTV: Of course. I'll say that one of the things worrying me about Kim is her partnership with Chelsea, who is not playing as hard, who isn't ruffling any feathers. You can see her moving into that classic "Survivor" role of the stereotypical pretty blonde who gets first place because her partner did all the dirty work. Even in this past episode, you see how bad her strategic game is: She tries to convince Jay to vote for Mike while speaking in front of the other girls, which gives away that she has a side-alliance with the former Salani women.

Cesternino: Well, I think we'll find out, when push comes to shove, if Kim is the "Survivor" player I think she is. Will she get rid of the sweet and unassuming Chelsea before the finals? When you get to the finals and it's ultimately revealed that Kim was the plotting strategist the whole time, juries have a tendency to say, "Well, we're giving the money to the nice person who really got to know us." If Kim is really playing the game, I think at some point it'll be time to ditch Chelsea ... and time to get on the Tarzan train!

MTV: Speaking of our man Tarzan, I don't want to completely downplay Chelsea's ability to hold a straight face in this game. She did an excellent job of that when Tarzan accused her of hating him because he's a plastic surgeon, and she's had some work done — easily one of the most awkward scenes I've ever seen on "Survivor."

Cesternino: It's about time that Tarzan said something. That was obvious to me, the whole time, that the reason Chelsea's been annoyed with Tarzan was that she was unhappy with her plastic surgeon and taking it out on Tarzan. That's textbook subliminal harassment, as Tarzan says.

MTV: Yes, it was nice to see Tarzan taking a stand for plastic surgeons everywhere. [Laughs] But you know, Tarzan actually had a brief moment of insightfulness, I thought. At tribal council, he tells Jeff Probst that he's the one getting played — that the wool is being pulled over the host's eyes. He had a sense that something was up.

Cesternino: It was a fun moment when Tarzan called out Probst, but I disagree with you that he realized something was going on. Ultimately, he voted for Christina. He was so far off the fence. He may think he's onto something, but he's really the most way off on the totem pole as to what was actually going on.

MTV: Oh, give the man some credit! He was off, but I think he definitely smelled something in the water.

Cesternino: He smelled something in the water alright, and it wasn't dirt!

MTV: Fair enough! [Laughs] Let's talk about Michael's blindside. Did you see that coming as the final result of this week's episode?

Cesternino: I had no doubt that it was Michael after the third or fourth time they showed him on camera talking about how safe he was and how surprised he would have been to get blindsided. If you're on "Survivor," if you're at tribal council, and Jeff Probst is asking you if you'd really be surprised if you're going home tonight, then pack your bags. You're going home.

MTV: The seeds for Mike's demise were planted as early as the reward challenge at least. Everyone's enjoying the barbecue, everything's good, and then things took a turn for the sneaky: Kim and Sabrina start talking strategy, about getting rid of the men once and for all.

Cesternino: For the real players, the people who are just the best of the best, the game never stops for them. It doesn't stop at night when you go to sleep, it doesn't stop when you're at a reward. When Leif and Michael are pigging out at the barbecue, for Kim, the game never stopped. It was almost like the fuel she got went right to that strategic part of her brain that said, "OK, this is what I need to do to advance in the game."

MTV: After this week, the women are up in numbers over the men by two. What can the guys do to swing the game back in their favor? Is there anything they can do?

Cesternino: I think for these men, I think they're out of it now. It's ladies' night on "Survivor: One World," and the men are going to be going home one by one. The good news for Troyzan is he still has an immunity idol. Maybe there's some way to play that to his advantage. But I looked at these numbers last night: there are six women, and the men need two of them to defect. Christina is one, but I can't imagine who the second woman to defect would be.

If you followed the arc of "Mad Men" actress January Jones' real-life pregnancy, you know that the slim TV star never looked ... that big. And by that big we mean the really full-figured look Jones' character, Betty Draper
, showed off during Sunday night's second episode of the show's fifth season.

That Betty was, well, big all over: in the face, the arms, middle. And while we still don't know the identity of Jones' real-life baby daddy, one mystery was solved on Monday when it was revealed that Jones was wearing a fat suit and prosthetic face and neck appliances to make her character look heavy duty.

While Jones was pregnant with her now-six-month-old song Xander during filming, instead of writing that into the plot, series creator Matthew Weiner had the series' writers explain it away by explaining that Betty had packed on the pounds out of boredom, depression and a distance from her second husband, Henry Francis.

The shocking makeover divided fans and once again caused the kind of Monday morning quarterbacking that TV execs salivate over, which was totally the point. According to the Hollywood Reporter the makeup artists on the show did the same thing for Jones that they did for cast mate Elizabeth Moss when her character Peggy Olsen was pregnant during season one. The crack team covered Jones in a fat suit and prosthetic facial and neck appliances that gave Betty a surprisingly zaftig look. In addition, they used a back double for the scene where Betty steps out of the shower.

While Jones' Betty has a history of weigh issues stemming from a childhood as a chubby kid whose every meal was monitored by her mother, only to shed that weight to become a slender model, the Reporter speculated that her emotional eating may have been triggered by her ex Don Draper's sexy, slim new wife, Megan.

Jones gave birth to Xander in September and was quickly back to her old shape, thanks, in part, she claimed, to such unconventional methods as eating her own placenta. "It's not witch-crafty or anything. It's something I was very hesitant about," she told People magazine at the time of eating the lining of her uterus in dehydrated pill form. "But we're only the only mammals who don't ingest our own placentas."

Easter lily poisoning in cats has only been recognized as a problem by the National Animal Poison Control Center for about 20 years. Easter lilies are part of the scientific Lilium plant family that contains around 100 potentially toxic species and many hybrids. The more common Lily species that are known to be toxic to cats are the Easter lily, Tiger lily, Asiatic lily and Stargazer lily.

Easter lilies are very popular around Easter holidays, but most pet owners know little about the dangers these plants pose to cats. Because cats can experience accidents or illnesses at any time, even if they live indoors year round, it?s a good idea to have cat insurance.

What makes Lilies poisonous and how the poison works is still unknown, but it is known that the toxin is water soluble and deadly. Cats can suffer from kidney failure after ingesting even tiny amounts of the plant and flower or drinking water from the plant. All parts of the plant are toxic, especially the flower. Even the yellow-orange pollen is toxic and the large amount of pollen can get everywhere, including on a cat?s coat or paws where it can be ingested while grooming.

Cats are very sensitive to poisoning by Easter lilies. Pet health is in danger, as the kidney is the primary organ affected, and cats can die of kidney failure 3-5 days after exposure. Initial symptoms usually develop 6-12 hours after ingestion and include vomiting, salivation, anorexia and depression. Kidney failure typically follows, and the signs are increased thirst and urination, dehydration and lethargy. Toxins build up in the blood as the kidney failure rapidly progresses, and there may be a recurrence of vomiting, decreased urine production or even absence of urine production, weakness, recumbency, hypothermia and death.

Prompt veterinary care is essential. If you suspect that your cat has ingested any part of the Easter lily plant, including pollen or water, consult your veterinarian immediately or take your cat to an emergency veterinary hospital without delay.
