Running With the Kenyans

In a move that is alternately naive, courageous, and entertaining, British journalist Adharanand Finn transplants to Kenya to learn from the world's best runners.

By Stephen Kurczy / May 17, 2012

Running With the Kenyans By Adharanand Finn Random House 288 pp.

Kenyans dominate long-distance running. Why? To see them gliding effortlessly at mind-boggling speeds to record-shattering marathon times worldwide can cause bewilderment. They seem super-human, almost alien, a mere pair of lungs atop two pistons.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Most of us have not attempted a single 8-minute mile since our eight-grade physical. Top marathoners run a 5-minute mile 26.2 times in a row. There must be a secret, is the simple explanation to this madness. If only we slow Westerners knew the secret, we too could run with the Kenyans.

And so the British journalist Adharanand Finn moves to Kenya in search of the answer for his book ?Running With the Kenyans.? That alone is audacious.

Making the book borderline silly, the 37-year-old Englishman fashions himself as a potential elite marathoner after winning a local 10k race (6.2 miles) in 38 and 1/2 minutes. To give some perspective: That?s the rough equivalent of winning a backyard game of horse and then heading to the Miami Heat summer camp to train with Lebron James.

There are easier ways to run faster than relocating with your wife and three children to East Africa. For starters, run daily. Finn, however, has not trained seriously in nearly two decades or ever run further than 13 miles. Anyone would get faster if they trained hard for several months, and Finn?s improvements hardly seem the result of living in Kenya.

Still, while I would rather have read about an already elite British or American runner testing the results of training in Kenya, Finn?s mix of naivet? and courage (and his wife?s patience and support) give him the incredible opportunity to meet and train with the world?s fastest runners. He is constantly bumping into a Boston Marathon winner here (Geoffrey Mutai) or a London Marathon winner there (Emmanuel Mutai, unrelated) as he trains for his first-ever marathon while also hunting down the ?secrets? as to why Kenyans are fast. His search focuses on the storied town of Iten in Rift Valley Province, a dusty village at 8,500-feet elevation known to be a breeding ground for the world?s fastest runners.

Search engine optimisation, Ensure Website Visibility With Search Engine Optim??hongxing128 (Flickr.com)

These days as owner of any business, however large or small, an online presence is necessary in order to capture a market and become successful, with SEO web development being the key issue. A business with a strong online presence is one that grows and continues to be successful but in order to achieve this status you need to use the very best techniques.

These days it is simply not acceptable to have a mediocre website for your firm; your site needs to be ranked up with the very best in the search engines such as Google and Bing and in order to achieve this your content needs to be constantly refreshed and pushed up the rankings.

SEO web development is big business these days with a huge number of competitors offering their services globally. Many businesses simply do not have the time to carry out their own SEO practices; others do not have the knowledge and this is where employing the services of a SEO web development expert comes in.

Although simple SEO practices such as correct keyword usage and back linking can be easy to learn, in order to have a site that is constantly live and updated with fresh content takes time. Many firms therefore choose to employ an individual or firm for their SEO web development needs, the proportion of any company budget used on these expenses rising from what is was in years gone by.

The importance of using the correct SEO techniques cannot be expressed enough; as much time and money that you pour into creating a user friendly site, unless the site is constantly updated then your efforts will be in vain. Of course, first and foremost you need to create a great site with interesting content and user friendly options and it is often common to now use the same company for both the site creation as well as the SEO work required.

It may be seen as unfortunate that many people were born before the age of computers and do not have an in depth understanding of how the world wide web works but what is clear is that when anyone types a query into a search engine, they will look first at the top ranked results. So, in order for your very own content to be up there with the best, the process required is to push traffic to your site that will not only increase viewings but of course create sales for your firm.

Any business these days that runs without an up to date SEO optimized website is missing out on huge amounts of visitors and sales. In a world where the Internet is relied on for an enormous amount of even everyday tasks, even the generation born before the computer age can realize just how important the Internet is and the huge impact it has had on everyone. The importance of SEO web development in the modern world really cannot be expressed enough; it simply means the difference between a mediocre business and a great success.

Battleship

I should take back the above claim that Battleship lacks any saving graces. There are at least two deliberately funny moments that hint at the existence of a zanily witty Airplane!-style spoof buried in this movie?s turgid depths. In the first, the commanders of the John Paul Jones come up with a computer program to track the movement of the underwater alien ships, and the grid on their screen precisely echoes the look of the old Battleship board game?it?s as if, in the midst of all this thunderous manliness, Berg wants us to remember he knows it?s all a silly game. The second moment of wit occurs in the climactic battle sequence, when our ragtag heroes leap aboard a decommissioned WWII ship that?s been turned into a floating museum. For no reason that?s ever explained, a group of elderly veterans is standing by on the old ship (were they docents?), and the old salts proceed to help their juniors ready the ship for intergalactic warfare. As the concessions stand is triumphantly overturned, ACDC's ??Thunderstruck? kicks in to accompany a sprightly fixer-upper montage. For those brief moments Battleship becomes something different, a jaunty m?lange of Top Gun patriotism and Starship Troopers looniness. If a sequel is truly inevitable, maybe Peter Berg can be encouraged to steer the ship in that direction.

Health and fitness reviews: Yeast Infection - You Might Not Know ...

Yeast infection or thrush is a common term these days. Even if you have never suffered from this condition, you may have heard about it from someone. It arises due to the growth of a fungus or yeast in the warm and moist areas of the body. If not treated on time, it can lead to severe diseases. Individuals with a weak immune system are prone to the yeast infection. While minor amounts of yeast present on the surface of the skin may be considered beneficial at times, but if it starts growing then it is a cause of concern. It develops due to several causes.

People often wonder how to cure yeast infection but fail to realize that without the cause not known, it cannot be treated properly. Your doctor will be able to find out the exact cause but you too must be vigilant about it.

Following are few of the common causes of yeast infection:

- it is caused due to the extensive multiplication or growth of the yeast in the different areas of the body.

- People who suffer from low immunity also contract these infections faster. Stress lowers your immunity which in turn reduces the body's capacity to combat disease causing bacteria or fungus. Thus, yeast continues to multiply and leads to infection.

- While women are the common sufferers of this infection, the reason is the hormonal changes. During the menstruation cycle, the body goes through a few changes which may lead to a vaginal infection. This can be before, after or even during the menstrual cycle.

- Women who use various contraceptives and birth control pills are also prone to it.

- Another common cause is the use of oils or Vaseline or petroleum jelly as a lubricant during intercourse. These are the best breeding ground for the fungus and can lead to infection in both men and women.

- Pregnancy also leads to it.

- If one of the partners is suffering from the infection, it can be transmitted to the other partner during an intercourse too. But it should not be mistaken as a sexually transmitted disease.

- For those who are not aware excessive use of antibiotics can also lead to infection. These antibiotics after a long duration produce an effect in the body that triggers the growth of the fungus.

- Diabetes mellitus is also one of the major causes because the imbalance in the blood sugar levels affects the immunity and the body's ability to heal.

There is a yeast infection treatment for all the possible cases. Your doctor may prescribe certain drugs or ointments to get rid of the infection. However basic hygiene is very important especially in the genital areas. Your armpits, mouth, thighs, skin under breasts are also equally affected by infection. One must try and keep them dry and cool as yeast grows in moist and warm areas.

There are also some indirect factors that may cause yeast infection. Though they may not always lead to an infection, but can definitely lead to conditions that trigger the growth of the fungus. Some of these indirect causes are as follows:

- Perfumes, dyes or other synthetic products may lead to such infections sometimes especially if they are of a substandard quality.
- Wearing tight clothes during summers can cause more warmth and moisture in many areas of the body.
- Irregular food habits and improper nutrition affects the immune system and thus may lead to it.
- Excessive sweating may also lead to such infections as it disturbs the pH level of the body.

In any case one must find the yeast infection cure at the earliest to avoid it from spreading throughout your body.

New attitude for Jets' offense with Sparano around

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:51 p.m. ET May 16, 2012

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - Joe McKnight remembers looking at the New York Jets' new playbook for the first time a few weeks ago and noticing a major difference.

It was simple and a lot easier to wrap his head around.

"Everybody had a sigh of relief," the running back said Wednesday, "when we didn't have the same amount of plays we had last year."

That's one of the biggest differences new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano brought to the Jets after replacing Brian Schottenheimer, who agreed to part ways with New York a few months ago and is now in the same position with St. Louis. While Schottenheimer had success at times with the Jets, one of the knocks on him was that his system was too complicated and that led to confusion and poor performances at times.

It's still early in offseason workouts, but Sparano has already made his mark on his new team.

"It's a different mentality with Coach Sparano," McKnight said. "He's the type of person that's like, if you can't stop him, he'll keep doing it. That's the kind of mentality, I think if we had last year I think we could have done better. We were just thinking so much last year."

Sparano, who was fired as Miami's head coach during last season, has made it clear that he is committed to a run-first style of offense - exactly what coach Rex Ryan likes. Schottenheimer got away from that approach early last season as the Jets tried throwing more with Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason in the mix. When that didn't work, the Jets tried to get back to the run - and the backs and offensive line had trouble with consistency.

"With Tony, that's the type of coach he seems to be, start on the ground and take it from there," said Greene who ran for a career-high 1,064 yards and six touchdowns last season. "I wouldn't be mad about it."

With Tim Tebow on board as the backup quarterback to Mark Sanchez, Sparano will certainly use a wildcat-style offense in spurts - as he did with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams a few seasons ago in Miami.

"It's going to be clear to the defense who's going to get the snap," McKnight said. "It's just who's going to get the ball after the ball is snapped."

McKnight, who could also play a much bigger role in the offense as the backup to Greene after leading the NFL in kickoff return average, packed on 15 pounds this offseason by eating a lot of McDonald's food.

"I just wanted to come back and not be labeled just as a specialty back, catching and receiving out of the backfield," said McKnight, who weighs a muscular 216 pounds. "I could spread the defenses out more and show people I can run between the tackles."

The players say Sparano has a fiery presence on the practice field, barking orders at his players with a no-nonsense approach, telling them all that they need to be accountable for their actions on the field.

"He yells and screams, but I'm used to it," said wide receiver Stephen Hill, the second-round pick out of Georgia Tech. "That's how they raise us in Atlanta. I definitely respond better when someone is on me."

New offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo fits right in with Sparano and Ryan in that he speaks his mind, no matter how bold or brash. DeGuglielmo was coached by Sparano at Boston University, and was on his staff the last few years in Miami. He followed his former boss to New York, where he is in charge of helping an offensive line that was inconsistent last season despite having lots of talent.

He expects all five of last year's starters to do so again this season, and that includes embattled right tackle Wayne Hunter.

"Until they ship him out of this building or until they shoot me dead in my office, that son of a gun's going to be the starting right tackle, and he's going to play well," DeGuglielmo said, adding that he believes "this is his year" and people would be hard-pressed to find a better player at the position.

"They should strap shields to this guy and put him in The Coliseum," he said.

DeGuglielmo replaces Bill Callahan, the popular assistant who went to Dallas in the offseason after developing the Jets' line into one of the best in the league. No pressure there, right?

"You don't make it in this league unless you know what you're doing. The difference between me and Bill: I have a Super Bowl ring, and he don't," said DeGuglielmo, who won with the Giants as an assistant offensive line coach in 2008. "Whether that means anything, it probably doesn't. He's a great football coach. ... I coach like `Guge.' That's what I do. As I told Rex when I interviewed: `I'm not worried about the ghost of Bill Callahan ... nor should he be worried about the ghost of Hudson Houck down in Dallas, who won some Super Bowl rings."'

DeGuglielmo praised his group of linemen and even said it has "the makings of being the best line in football" - as it was considered by many to be a few years ago when the Jets went to consecutive AFC title games.

"I'm not going to compare them to what they did two years ago," he said. "Two years ago, I was 230 pounds and now, I'm 290. So, you could say, `Hey, Guge used to look good in that suit,' but right now I can't put one leg into it. It doesn't matter what I was like two years ago. I fluctuate 60 here, 60 there. Whatever. It's like peeing in a pool. Nobody knows the difference."

NOTES: NT Kenrick Ellis, the team's third-round pick last year, is facing a trial for a malicious wounding felony charge from an incident while in college at Hampton University. He's scheduled for a pre-trial hearing Thursday and jury trial next Tuesday. "I don't know right now," Ellis said when asked if he could miss time with the team. "It's a legal issue, still pending, an open case. I don't want to comment on anything about it." Ellis could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. ... C Nick Mangold made a surprise appearance on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" on Tuesday night, taking part in a skit in which he had his chest waxed. Mangold said he had tickets for the show and producers approached him a few hours before taping. "Like an idiot, I said yes," Mangold said. "And the rest is on film." ... LB Bryan Thomas and TE Jeff Cumberland, both coming back from Achilles injuries, expect to be ready for training camp.

Iraq veteran uses rap to treat his PTSD

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? On one of the many days Leo Dunson wanted to die, the Iraq veteran put a gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. The loaded weapon misfired. For the troubled former soldier, it was another inexplicable failure, like his divorce or inability to make friends after returning from the war.

In a Las Vegas recording studio, Dunson rapped about his life: "What's wrong with me? Got PTSD. These pills ain't working, man, I still can't think."

One in six Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder in 2011, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Some committed suicide. Others are receiving mental health services at military hospitals. Many more are like Dunson and have refused help, according to research by the Department of Veterans Affairs' National Center for PTSD.

Dunson, who was discharged from the Army in 2008 and diagnosed by the military with PTSD, uses his music to examine his disappointment with veteran life. It is the only thing keeping him alive, he said. He refuses to attend counseling or visit his local VA hospital.

The use of music to heal war wounds is part of an emerging field of alternative treatment being embraced by military officials eager to help veterans suffering from PTSD. In Wisconsin, New Jersey, California and other states, government doctors in recent months have launched experimental music therapy programs that rely on the smoothing sounds of classical or acoustic music to help veterans get well.

But Dunson, now 26, isn't listening to serene tunes in some quiet room. His self-treatment is violent images and words, the gritty marriage of a genre born in low-income, black neighborhoods and the horrors of a foreign war.

He made five albums in four years, all focused on his training and service as an infantryman. Thousands of fans followed him on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, where he posts his songs. He enrolled in college, hoping to pursue a career in public service. This year, Dunson moved into his first bachelor apartment.

And still, he describes himself as a man without happiness or friends.

"You are like, what the heck did I do to deserve this?" he said.

In his music, Dunson recalls pressing a gun against an enemy's mouth, becoming an alcoholic and hitting his wife. He laments learning how to kill when he was only 20 years old.

"I'm back and forth in my head and I don't know what's wrong," he raps in "PTSD." ''At nights I shake. I feel like a stranger is in my home. Me and my wife can't get along."

On a different record, he confessed: "My mind ain't been put to rest. And they wonder why all I talk about is these bullets and how a trigger of a gun I want to pull it and how badly my military training I want to misuse it."

In yet another song, Dunson expressed the words he would never tell his family: "Honestly, over there, I wish I had died."

He was 18 when he enlisted, eager to make a difference and serve his country after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. He grew up in the Army, meeting the mother of his only child near his base in Alaska.

In Iraq, it was difficult to sleep. Dunson said he worried he would wake up in an insurgent's makeshift torture chamber.

There were plenty of signs he was drifting far from the good-natured child his family says he once was. One day, he and his fellow soldiers pretended to arrest an Iraqi boy. As the child cried, the soldiers taunted him, according to video Dunson took that day. Dunson said it was a joke.

His assault rifle became his life, he said. He held it while he ate and slept and fired toward crowds of Iraqis when he felt threatened. One day, he took his gun and put it to his friend's head. They laughed and someone took a photo.

Through it all, Dunson worried about the man he was becoming. When his sergeant urged him to kill anything in sight one day, he balked. "This is crazy," he recalled thinking.

The life he had left was gone. After serving in Iraq, Dunson came home to a tense relationship with his wife. She denied cheating on him, but later took their daughter and moved in with another soldier.

Dunson plotted to kill them, convinced he could easily dispose of their bodies in the Alaskan wilderness. In less than a year, he was arrested four times for various domestic abuse charges, he said.

"I felt angry and out of control, like I don't know what I might do angry," he said.

He moved to Las Vegas and stayed on his cousin's couch. Though he had once been close with his family, Dunson stopped visiting or telephoning his other relatives, certain they were disappointed in him.

"I feel like they are saying, 'Oh, he lost his wife, he is crazy. Oh, he went to war.' Not saying it, but in their heads, they are saying it the whole time, like I don't fit in," he said.

The faces of the men he killed ? the husbands, fathers and brothers ? haunted him. Even after his ex-wife moved their daughter to Las Vegas to be near him, her happy Facebook musings about holiday celebrations and weekend activities upset him. On several occasions, he climbed to the roof of an empty condominium tower and stared at the concrete below, willing himself to jump.

LaTonya Williams, 30, said the changes in her once easygoing cousin are stark.

"He was never violent before," she said. "He was the center of my family. Everyone loved him. He had the best jokes and the best sense of humor ... and when he came back he was a completely different person. He's not the Leo that everybody knew him to be."

Dunson has a youthful face and a muscular body. When he speaks, he appears friendly and well-mannered, a sharp contrast to the rage in his music. He works as a security guard at night and then goes directly to class most mornings. On the weekends, he visits with his daughter.

Through his music, Dunson explored his desire to kill and die. He found a producer and director to make his albums and videos more professional. Soon, he was performing concerts at bases and veterans events.

"Music has always been my therapy," he said.

Concetta Tomaino, executive director of the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function in New York, has used music to treat victims of dementia, trauma and gang violence. She said patients respond to music from their youth or happier days. Rap might help PTSD victims process the violence they experienced in conflict, she said.

"If a person has had a traumatic experience and can vent that in music, that can be very positive," she said. "Anybody who deals with people in some trauma will tell you the most damaging thing to do is suppress it."

Dunson said he hopes his music helps other veterans confront their PTSD, even as he struggles with it himself.

"I lost it all, not just my wife and daughter, but my mind," he said. "If I had died over there, I would have got a 21-gun salute, everybody would praise me like I was a king. What do I get now?"

China's fifth-gen stealth fighter prototype: the Chengdu J-20

The United States has the F-22. Russia has the Sukhoi T-50. And now, a series of recent pics shows that China has begun testing a second prototype of its own fifth-generation stealth aircraft, the Chengdu J-20.

These pictures come from various Chinese sources, including a government-backed newspaper, and seem to show a recent test-flight of the second J-20 prototype (the first one flew last year) at an unknown military airfield. If the J-20 looks sorta familiar, that's because it's (arguably) the body of a T-50 attached to the front of an F-22 with an F-35 nose.

There's still a lot we don't know about the J-20. In fact, people in the know aren't even completely sure it's a fighter at all.Compared to an aircraft like the F-22, the J-20 is very long (and probably heavy) without a matching increase in wing size, suggesting that it's not intended to be agile like a fighter. It seems more likely that the J-20 is intended to be a long-range stealthy supersonic heavy interceptor. This is reinforced by the fact that the stealthy bit of the J-20 is really just its nose: from the back, it's not very stealthy at all. The suggests that the J-20 is an attack aircraft, primarily designed to penetrate and destroy targets protected by complex modern air defense systems.

While the J-20 might not be able to stand up to an F-22 in a dogfight, the F-22 starts to run into problems when China can produce an estimated five J-20s for the cost of just one F-22. Even if that one F-22 is technically capable of shooting down five J-20s all by itself, it's not going to have the range or endurance to do so in a combat scenario. The F-22 may, by all accounts, be a much better aircraft, but at some point, a J-20 Zerg rush by the Chinese would just not be possible to counter.

Canon ditching humans, cameras hand-made by robots by 2015

Image

Canon has announced that it'll ditch human production line employees and rely entirely on robots to build its cameras. Several Japanese companies have felt the pinch thanks to the soaring value of the yen and have acted quickly to move production overseas, but Canon has resisted doing the same. Company spokesperson Jan Misumi has said that the move won't cause job losses as those employees will be moved into other parts of the organization once the switchover has been completed -- which could be as early as 2015. Now we just need to check our diaries as to when the Robopocalypse is due to begin.

Public Reference and Education Review: Best Fly Rods in the Market

When we came up with some request on fishing equipment, it was a moment where we must able to find an online store that can provide any equipment we need. It is not difficult to find such store, in which there are many of them spread widely throughout the cyber space. All we need here is just proper store. And I may recommend such one that can be found easily by typing an address: Tridentflyfishing.com. In that address, there is a wide variety of fishing equipment, like one such as TFO fly rods. The latter comes in varied choices, each of which is recognized through some name: BVK (sell at $ 224.95), BVK-3 ($ 99.95), Finesse ($ 179.99), Signature 2 ($ 109.95), and Professional 2 ($ 140.95).But here, I don?t intend to mention all fishing equipments that already provided by that site. Instead of doing that, I wish to take a focus only on fly rods. So here, what you are going to find is just my recommendation on several fly rods that can be found from the site. Beside one that I mentioned above, there is also other categories such as Greys Fly Rods, which in essence divided into: XF 2 Series (sell at $ 495.00), GS Double Handled ($ 189.00), GS 2 Double Handled ($ 209.00), GRXi+ Double Handled ($ 249.00), XF2 Saltwater ($ 299.00), and many more. Each of these Fly Rods can be matched with any circumstance you are facing with, such as saltwater or freshwater. There is also some of them which suited with all types of water. So when you need a good store which able to offer numerous fishing equipment, Trident Fly Fishing is the only site that should be visited. One last option on fly rods is also available there, namely bamboo fly rods. Like previous two, the latter came along with so much option. All you need to do is just picks up one of them, which can be suited with your wish and need.

Rangers' Josh Hamilton joins select club with 4-homer game vs. Orioles (+video)

The Texas Rangers outfielder drove in eight runs with four swings of the bat Tuesday night.

Not even Babe Ruth was able to do what Josh Hamilton of the Rangers did Tuesday night against the Orioles in Baltimore - hit four home runs in a single game - as Texas beat the O's, 10-3.

Hamilton hit three of the blasts to center field and one to left off three different Oriole pitchers at Camden Yards. All the home runs were two-run shots. He ended up going five-for-five at the plate, adding a fifth-inning double.

The Rangers center fielder enjoyed how his teammates reacted as much as hitting the home runs, ESPN.com reported.

"I was saying after I hit two that I had never hit three in a game before. What a blessing that was," Hamilton said. "And then to hit four, it was just an awesome feeling to see how excited my teammates got.

"It reminds you of when you're in Little League and a little kid, and just the excitement and why we play the game. Things like that. You never know what can happen. It was just an absolute blessing."

The 'Big League Stew' Yahoo! Sports blog points out that Hamilton is the 16th major leaguer to accomplish the feat. Hamilton joins such greats as Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, and Mike Schmidt in the select four-homer game club.

Afterwards, Hamilton, a early AL M.V.P. candidate, put his career night in perspective, according to MLB.com.

"Obviously, other than the World Series, it's the highlight of my big league career," Hamilton said.

Hamilton leads the major leagues in hitting with a .406 average, 14 home runs and 36 RBIs. The Rangers currently lead the American League West Division with a 20-10 record.

Acer Liquid Glow hits the FCC, keeps its secrets

Image

Acer's Liquid series phones only occasionally reach the FCC, so it's with some surprise that we've just spotted the still-fresh Liquid Glow getting the US agency's approval under its E330 model name. Details are scarce as to whether or not there's been any changes made to the Android 4.0 phone on its way out of Taiwan, however: there's no telltale signs like cellular frequencies or carrier badging. If anything, Acer is hoping to keep information hush-hush by stamping a 180-day confidentiality seal on the manual and photos. It's entirely possible that this is the international GSM model with no 3G support for North American carriers, so we wouldn't get worked up about local release plans. Even so, knowing Canadian carrier Rogers' tendency to offer Acer phones, there's still a possibility that a version of the Liquid Glow might go on sale this side of the Pacific.

Rare gorillas captured by hidden camera (+video)

The video offers researchers a very unusual opportunity to view the Cross River gorilla behaving normally.

The rarest gorilla on Earth, the elusive Cross River gorilla, has been caught on film by a hidden camera trap for the first time ever.

Researchers estimate that only about 250 to 300 of the gorillas remain on the planet, and humans have rarely observed these critically-endangered primates?in their natural habitat.

The two-minute footage shows eight of the gorillas making their way through a forest in Cameroon. The video offers a glimpse of classic gorilla behavior, yet also reveals the plight of the threatened apes.

"The footage provides us with our first tantalizing glimpses of Cross River gorillas behaving normally in their environment," said Christopher Jameson, director of the Takamanda Mone Landscape Project. "A person can study these animals for years and never even catch a glimpse of the gorillas, much less see anything like this."

In a movie-worthy moment (at about 1:10 in the video), a massive silverback gorilla suddenly races along the forest path, beating his chest.

Seconds later (at about 1:18), another gorilla lopes across the frame; the animal is missing a hand. The wound appears to be healed, but could have been caused by a hunter's trap, according to a statement from the Wildlife Conservation Society, the group that captured the?rare gorilla video?with one of four camera traps set up in the Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary.

"Cross River gorillas occur in very low densities across their entire range, so the appearance of a possible snare injury is a reminder that continued law enforcement efforts are needed to prevent further injuries to gorillas in the sanctuary," Liz Macfie, gorilla coordinator for WCS's Species Program, said in a statement.

Although local people don't hunt the gorillas directly, traps set for other forest animals can sometimes injure the apes.

Cross River gorillas are extremely shy, and typically flee at the first sight of humans. They are the rarest of the four gorilla subspecies, and live only in the mountain forests that straddle the border of Cameroon and Nigeria.

NVIDIA confirms no 'Project Grey' until 2013, Tegra 3 LTE later this year

NVIDIA confirms no 'Project Grey' until 2013, Tegra 3 LTE later this yearWhile earnings calls are rarely the veritable dial-in party, sometimes they do toss up a juicy gambit or disappointing revelation. While NVIDIA was dishing out projections for Q1 2013, it pretty much quashed any hopes of seeing an in-house LTE Tegra chip in 2012. While we were assured that Tegra 3 LTE phones would come this year -- based on those partnerships announced back in February -- it was also stated that the thoroughbred Tegra LTE chip wouldn't be a reality until 2013. So, this pretty much ties in with what we had heard, but this time, from the horse's mouth.

Mozilla and Google ARMwrestle Microsoft

Mozilla and Google are challenging Microsoft's decision to shut out all browsers other than Internet Explorer from Windows 8 devices that use ARM processors. This restricts user choice, reduces competition, chills innovation, and might have antitrust implications, among other bad things, Mozilla general counsel Harvey Anderson asserted.
