Hypnosis Book | Journal of Hypnosis

Books on hypnosis and conversational hypnosis can be found through the various sources of Internet, brick and mortar stores, magazines, as well as in the local library. Generally, it is the application of hypnosis to self-improvement that takes a hypnosis book on the subject onto the best-seller list, for example: ?Powerful Mind Through Self-Hypnosis: A Practical Guide to Complete Self-Mastery? by Cathal O?Briain.

Many of these are excellent overviews from a self-help perspective. However, often these books lack a real discussion of hypnotic technique. To find a valid book on hypnosis from among a plethora of vague new age pronouncements, mere conjecture, or fantasy, the reader must do a bit of research based on their goal in using hypnosis.

Whether the reader?s goal is to use hypnosis to relieve pain, change an unwanted behavior, or simply to learn more about the subject, good and reliable starting points can be found in academic journals dealing with hypnosis, such as the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis (AJCH) and the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis.

AJCH, for example, provides information online as to where to find reliable and uniformly accepted definitions of terms and basic guides to hypnosis and hypnosis topics, as well as more advanced works. Even if a specific topic such as conversational hypnosis is not represented, these sites can be used to verify the accuracy of definitions and discussions in consulted works.

Assuming the reader wishes to search on their own, or cannot find satisfactory works at the academic sites, the wide variety of books on general and specific topics in hypnosis and conversational hypnosis that can be found through the Internet alone can be reviewed for relevance by checking for key terms.

For conversational hypnosis, a review of the literature suggests that any relevant book will discuss the use of basic and subtle persuasion techniques as opposed to outright manipulation and feature descriptions of both the structured Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and the more informal Erickson method. For more general hypnosis study, the reader should certainly seek a book that actually discusses hypnosis and hypnotic techniques rather than applications to self-help with little detail.

A few examples of available books which include basic texts on hypnosis recommended from the AJCH are: Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors, D.Corydon Hammond, PhD, Editor (1990) and Hypnotic Induction and Suggestion, D. Corydon Hammond, PhD, Editor (1998).

Two popular writers on the subject of conversational hypnosis are Carol Sommer, author of ?Conversational Hypnosis: A Manual of Indirect Suggestion? (1992) and Igor Ledochowski, ?The Deep Trance Training Manual: Hypnotic Skills? (2003). Both are available through such online sites as Amazon. Books on NLP include: Secrets of NLP ? Hypnotherapy ? Hypnotic Psychology ? Street Hypnosis and Stage Hypnotism by Jonathan Royle (2010) and Persuasion Skills Black Book: Practical NLP Language Patterns for Getting The Response You Want by Rintu Basu and Debbie Jenkins (2009).

Books on the Erickson method include My Voice Will Go with You: The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Erickson by Sidney Rosen (1991) and Conversational Induction with Utilization of Spontaneous Trance (Ericksonian Approaches to Hypnosis and Psychotherapy, P320-87) by Kay Thompson and The Milton H. Erickson Foundation. (1983)

Climate change stories from the abyss

Thursday, August 30, 2012

A team of scientists including those from the University of Southampton have shed new light on the world's history of climate change.

The Pacific Ocean has remained the largest of all oceans on the planet for many million years. It covers one third of the Earth's surface and has a mean depth of 4.2 km. Its biologically productive equatorial regions play an important role particularly to the global carbon cycle and long-term climate development.

During a four-month expedition of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP) on board the US drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution an international team of more than 100 scientists and technicians recovered 6.3 kilometers of sediment cores from water depths between 4.3 and 5.1 km and drilled 6.3 km of sediment cores at eight locations.

The cores offered an excellent archive of Earth's history and showed how global climate development during the past 55 million years is mirrored and influenced by geochemical processes deep within the ocean.

The findings are published in the latest edition of Nature.

Professor Heiko P?like, of the University of Southampton and National Oceanography Centre, Southampton was co-chief scientist of the cruise and lead author of the Nature study.

He explains: "Nowadays we often discuss global warming induced by man-made carbon dioxide. However, on geological timescales of millions of years other processes determine the carbon cycle."

Volcanoes are one major source of carbon dioxide input to the atmosphere. On the other hand the greenhouse gas is removed by weathering of rocks made up of carbonate.

"The overall balance of these processes is reflected in the deep ocean's carbonate compensation depth, the CCD," the MARUM scientist continues.

"This invisible surface is defined as the depth in the oceans at which the mineral calcite is dissolved. Hardly any biological remains made from carbonate below the CCD, for example chalk and microscopic plankton, are preserved. Instead the sediment that consists mostly of clay and plankton remains made from silica.

"The interesting point in our study is that the carbonate boundary is fluctuating over time. It shallows during periods of warm climate and normally deepens when ice age conditions prevail."

In the study, Professor P?like and co-workers demonstrate that in the equatorial Pacific the CCD was at 3.3 to 3.6km 55 million years ago. Between 52 and 47 million years ago, when very warm climate conditions prevailed, the CCD leveled up to 3 km. 34 million years ago, when the Earth slowly but steadily cooled and the first ice domes formed in Antarctica the CCD went down too. 10.5 million years ago it reached 4.8 km.

The cores drilled during the expedition strikingly demonstrate that the interplay of climate development and carbon cycle was not a one-way street at all.

"From 46 to 34 million years ago, when Earth turned into a permanent icehouse, our record reveals five intervals during which the CCD fluctuated upwards and downwards in the range of 200 and 900 metres," Professor P?like says. "These events, that often mirror warming and cooling phases, persisted between 250,000 and one million years."

Similar episodes were registered in the sediment cores for later parts of the Earth's history. 18.5 million years ago the CCD moved upward about 600 metres ? only to sink down to 4.7 km 2.5 million years later. Today, the Pacific carbonate compensation depth is at 4.5 km.

Sony CEO says Vita gaming sales near expectations

BERLIN (Reuters) - Sony Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai said on Thursday that its new gaming device Vita was mostly selling in line with its expectations, though in some places it was off the pace.

Vita hit the stores earlier this year, the latest in a line of mobile gaming gadgets in the spirit of Nintendo's Game Boy and Atari's Lynx, but some analysts have questioned whether there is room for such a device in a market increasingly dominated by games played on smartphones and tablets.

"Worldwide, the Vita is pretty much along where we would expect it to be, maybe trending behind in certain territories," Hirai told Reuters on the sidelines of IFA, Europe's biggest consumer trade show, held in Berlin.

He declined to disclose where sales were lagging.

When he took the helm at Sony in April, Hirai vowed to revive the fortunes of the company, maker of the Walkman music player and PlayStation games console, after years of competition from foreign rivals had broken its dominance in consumer electronics.

Part of the plan is betting Sony's future on mobile devices such as the Xperia smartphone, gaming and digital imaging, while developing new businesses, including a medical unit.

In Berlin Sony launched three smartphones and one tablet, all powered by Google's Android platform, saying patent challenges facing the software platform had not affected its business.

Sony Mobile chief Kunimasa Suzuki told Reuters he was confident of selling more smartphones in fiscal year 2012-2013 than the 34 million it shifted in the previous year.

After Sony returned a record net loss of 455 billion yen ($5.8 billion) for the last fiscal year to March 31, Hirai promised 10,000 job cuts and big cost reductions in the TV unit, which has clocked up losses of about $12 billion in the past decade.

Hirai said the group was ahead of plan to return the TV business to the black. "This fiscal year we will halve our losses from what we made last year. We are ahead of track."

Sony is also in talks with several companies who could be interested in its chemicals business, Hirai said. The unit makes material used in consumer electronic products and employs several thousand people. He declined to elaborate.

As for other Japanese exporters, the strength of the yen weighs on Sony's results. The currency has become a safe-haven destination for many investors as debt concerns undermine confidence in both the euro and the dollar.

"The currencies are a real pain," Hirai said. We can complain about that, but it is the reality we have to face."

Since Sony's European sales account for a fifth of all revenue, compared with a tenth at both Panasonic Corp and Sharp, it is particularly sensitive to currency swings against the euro.

VISITING the Amamoor State Forest campgrounds, Gympie Muster chief executive officer James Dein saw for himself one of the Muster's star performers.

Gympie country musician Lance Friend was invited to do an impromptu performance on the Muster main stage before John Williamson in front of a crowd of thousands on Sunday.

CONTRIBUTED

VISITING the Amamoor State Forest campgrounds, Gympie Muster chief executive officer James Dein saw for himself one of the Muster's star performers.

Mr Dein was at one of the pre-Muster camp parties where revellers were enjoying one of their favourite country music performers, Lance Friend.

He entertained many a late-night crowd around their campsites and regularly entertained at the legendary two-storey campsite, Swill Hill.

After all, late nights, campfires, guitars and singing, is what the Muster is all about.

Mr Dein was so impressed by what he saw and heard that he arranged for Mr Friend to appear on the main stage just before John Williamson.

He played two of his charted songs to an ecstatic crowd.

Thousands of campers, who had the pleasure of being entertained by Mr Friend during the past 10 years at their campsites, were proud to see him up there on the main stage playing to thousands of people.

Many tears were shed among the 15,000-strong crowd following Mr Friend's rendition of his latest single, Full of Aussie Pride.

This enthusiastic response from the crowd encouraged Mr Dein to slot Mr Friend in next year's main stage line-up for a full performance.

It's all happening for the Gympie-based musician. After four-and-a-half years in the making, he has finally released his latest album, The Album, featuring the hit songs The Condamine and If I had a Wish.

The Album is available on iTunes. To grab a copy, head to lancefriend.com and follow the links to order.

Lindsay Lohan cleared in alleged theft

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Prosecutors on Tuesday cleared actress Lindsay Lohan of any involvement in an alleged theft of some $100,000 worth of property from a Hollywood Hills home where she recently stayed, citing insufficient evidence.

Lohan, 26, was questioned by police after the home's owner named her in connection with the alleged theft. But after investigators finished their probe, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Deborah L. Kranze declined to charge anyone, including the actress and an assistant who was with her.

"We do not have sufficient evidence to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt," Kranze wrote in evaluating the case.

Celebrity website TMZ.com reported last week that the troubled actress and her assistant were guests at the home during an all-night party and the owner had later reported the theft of stolen jewelry, including watches.

The Los Angeles Times said on Tuesday that the owner was no longer cooperating with the investigation.

"Lindsay is glad this matter has been cleared up so she can focus on her upcoming projects. It is unfortunate that many media outlets were quick to point fingers and jump to conclusions without having all the facts," Lohan's spokesman said in a statement.

Lohan was released from formal probation in March over charges in 2007 of drunk driving and cocaine possession. Recently she has had guest roles on TV sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live," a cameo appearance on "Glee" and has filmed the TV movie "Liz & Dick."

The actress is still on informal probation until 2014 in connection with a jewelry theft case last year. If charges had been brought in the latest incident, officials could have revoked her probation and sent her to jail.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC dock hands-on

And hey, what's a Windows 8 tablet without a docking station? Sure enough, Samsung was showing off a snazzy one tonight that turns your bright and beautiful ATIV Smart PC (which is a bit chunkier than its brother) into a notebook. The tablet slots into the top of the keyboard dock, with the Windows 8 button obscured slightly by the top of the dock. The device does look a fair amount like a netbook when it's firmly nestled inside. But we have to say, the quality of the dock doesn't match the beauty of the tablet itself, the plasticky bottom clashing with the brushed aluminum backing, particularly where the lip shows up slightly on the rear of the device.

When using the dock, you're likely going to spend most of your time in the classic UI -- and when you want to switch, you can just hit the button at the top of the dock to release the tablet from its docky prison. The buttons and trackpad feel a bit like a low-end netbook, and we had to do some fiddling to get that mouse across the desktop. We're hoping that Samsung will either release a slicker version or we'll be seeing something from a third-party manufacturer. In the meantime, the dock feels more like a second home for the tablet, best saved for those rare occasions when you'll need to do, say, some serious word processing.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC dock hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Aug 2012 14:05:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Roger Federer: Is Andy Murray ready to beat the world's No. 1?

Roger Federer won Wimbledon, is back at No. 1, and says it will take something special to beat him at the US Open. Can Andy Murray beat Roger Federer?

Federer beat Briton Andy Murray to win the 2012 Wimbledon title, regained his world No. 1 ranking and comes into the final grand slam of the year in ominous form.

"I'm just happy how I'm playing," said Federer. "I already reached my goal for the year becoming world No. 1 and getting Wimbledon again and getting a medal for Switzerland.

"It's been incredible."

Federer also said that he's ready to go the distance at the US Open.

"I felt good last year, but probably felt that maybe at times the matches were not always in my racquet, whereas maybe this time around I feel like if I'm playing well I can dictate who's going to win or lose," said Federer.

"It's going to take something special from my opponent to win. That's kind of how it feels right now."

Play was suspended for about two hours on the opening day of the U.S. Open on Monday when rain showers swept through the National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows.

Defending champion and seventh seed Samantha Stosur of Australia was one of the few players to reach the second round before the rain came as she crushed Croatia's Petra Martic 6-1, 6-1.?

Meanwhile, Andy Murray, who lost to Federer in the Wimbledon final but beat the Swiss weeks later at the same venue to win gold at the London Olympics, is also in action on Monday against Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr.

Despite his golden summer, Murray said he was not about to slack off.
"I needed to make sure that afterwards I worked hard," he said. "Whether you're confident or not confident, providing you work hard and you do all the right things in training, then you'll get a good result.

"That was the most important thing, to make sure I kept my feet on the ground and keep working hard and try to improve.
"Am I more confident? You never know what's going to happen when you get out there on the court. I prepared well. I trained hard the last five, six days, so I'm ready to go."

Also taking the court on Monday will be former champions Maria Sharapova, who completed her career grand slam this year at the French Open, and three-times U.S. Open titlist Kim Clijsters.

Clijsters, who faces American Victoria Duval, will retire after the tournament.
"Obviously this place is magical for me," the Belgian said. "I have had so many beautiful memories. I have enjoyed coming here from when I was a junior.
"I love the surface, I love the atmosphere, and I'm excited."

Sharapova, who won at Flushing Meadows in 2006, will face Hungary's Melinda Czink in her opening-round match. The Russian has not played since winning a silver medal at the Olympics.

"I feel really good," she said. "I went into Montreal and was supposed to play but I got a stomach bug and just decided to give it a rest.
"I think it was a sign my body just needed to slow down. It was a lot of travel, a lot of playing. Had a hectic summer.
"I know that if I feel healthy and I have enough practice, I'm okay. I don't feel like I need to play three tournaments in a row in order to be ready for the U.S. Open." (Editing by Peter Rutherford)

'Breaking Bad': Bob Odenkirk Talks Casting, Comedy

Comedic actor Bob Odenkirk has appeared on one of TV's most intense dramas for four seasons now as flashy criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, who represents Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul).

Stepping onto "Breaking Bad" was intimidating enough for Odenkirk, but playing the comic relief terrified him.

"I was wondering, 'What the hell are they doing hiring me for this?'" Odenkirk said in an interview with Rolling Stone. "I wouldn't have been surprised if I showed up on set, and they said, 'Oh my goodness, no, no, we wanted the other Bob Odenkirk, the one who does dramas.'"

But Odenkirk has become a series favorite, and his love of comedy hasn't waned.

While promoting "Breaking Bad" on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," the actor gushed about late comedian Chris Farley.

"Chris was very genuine," said Odenkirk, who has appeared on "Saturday Night Live" and written for "The Ben Stiller Show" and "Late Night With Conan O'Brien." "A lot of people in showbiz do that, and they're faking it... but Chris was absolutely, genuinely a sweet guy."

For more on Odenkirk, head over to Rolling Stone.

The mid-Season 5 "Breaking Bad" finale airs Sunday, September 2 on AMC at 10 p.m. ET.

Ouya Wants to 'Disrupt' the Console Industry | Games and Me

After years in the gaming industry, Julie Uhrman started to notice a significant shift ? excitement for console and PC gaming started to fade, while mobile platforms got all the attention.

Uhrman, whose resume includes executive roles with video game companies like GameFly, IGN, and Vivendi Universal, set out on a mission to bring gaming back to the living room. Her idea was to develop a $99, Android-powered video game console that offers free-to-play titles for gamers, and is accessible to developers.

?I started reaching out to game industry professionals and developers and asked them if we could build a game console on Android for the television,? Uhrman said in a recent interview with PCMag. ?Resoundingly, I got ?that?s a great idea, I can?t believe that hasn?t been done before,? and the idea of an open game console that leveraged Android, a very popular and well-used operating system, came into vision.?

Ouya 2

Keeping with the theme of openness, Uhrman and her team took to the crowd-sourced fundraising platform Kickstarter last month to solicit the financing they needed to produce the console ? dubbed Ouya (right). You probably know the story by now, but if not, then here?s the gist: the company initially sought to raise $950,000 on Kickstarter but ended up with $8.6 million in donations.

When she talks about Ouya (rhymes with booya), Uhrman?s passion and enthusiasm is infectious.

?Ouya is really an audacious plan to disrupt the console industry,? she said. ?

Uhrman isn?t alone in her excitement. The company?s list of advisors reads like a who?s-who of gaming industry luminaries. Plus, pre-orders are blowing away expectations, and thousands of developers have expressed interest in making games for the platform.

With promises to deliver its first batch of consoles by next March, some have questioned the company?s ability to actually deliver. But if Uhrman has any concerns about meeting the deadline, she isn?t making them known.

?I am absolutely confident that we can deliver on our promise to build a great product with great content for March of 2013,? Uhrman said.

PCMag sat down with Uhrman recently to find out about the purpose behind bringing a product like this to market, where the team is at with the effort, and more.

PCMag: How long has Ouya been in development and what has gone into the process of designing and building it so far?
Uhrman: We have been working on this since the end of last year. Ouya is really an audacious plan to disrupt the console industry and it is three parts: hardware, software, and a game ecosystem.

Yves Behar

We needed to first vet the assumption that we could build a powerful, beautifully designed game console for the television for $99. We partnered with a lot of individuals who had built hardware before ? advisors and friends. We brought on Yves B?har (left), who built the Jambox and has beautiful designs and understands how to build for an audience.

We are not building a rocket ship here ? all of our components are commodity components. We are taking something that is very common and combining it in a new way. So we first validated that it was possible to bring it to the audience for $99.

Then we had to determine what the right business model was. We believe in openness and accessibility, and we chose Android as the underlying operating system. As it relates to a business model, we embraced something that core gamers have embraced both on a PC and a mobile platform, which is the idea of free-to-play games.? For us that really means free to try.

Every game on Ouya has some element that is free for the user, and then it?s up to developers to determine how they want to monetize the content. They can choose in-app purchases, subscriptions, or a fully paid version after the free demo.

Games can run from $0.99 to $59.99 but, fundamentally, every gamer gets the opportunity to try something for free, and that is basically the core value proposition of Ouya. It?s an open, accessible, affordable game console for the TV built on Android, where its $99 and all the games are free to try.

It?s also accessible for developers in that for $99 you get a game console and an SDK. Our game console is also a debug kit, and there are no yearly licensing fees or expensive SDKs. You get a game console and all the tools you need to build great games for less than the price of two console games. We embrace an app submission model similar to mobile, so anybody who ever wanted to build a game for the TV can do so.

Ouya parts

PCMag: How did you come up with the name Ouya?
Uhrman: We worked with Yves B?har and the fuseproject on that. Openness is very important to us as it relates to developers and gamers and the way we even brought the product to market ? leveraging Kickstarter. The O in Ouya stands for openness.

PCMag: When did you first realize that this idea resonated with people?
Uhrman: Early on we took the idea to developers and received overwhelmingly positive response. Brian Fargo became an investor and advisor. Adam Saltsman, Adam Nash from Mojang, Jordan Mechner ? all of these industry luminaries, including Ed Fries of the original Xbox team, who became an advisor ? believed in this idea of openness and accessibility and allowing anyone who wants to develop a game for the television to do so.

Then when we took this idea to Kickstarter, we were overwhelmed by the level of support from gamers. In a matter of 29 days we had over 63,000 backers ? people who believed in Ouya and want Ouya in their living room and are telling us so by opening up their pocket books and pre-ordering our device, which won?t be available until March of 2013.

Kickstarter really gave us the ability to open up a two-way dialogue with gamers and developers and find out if this is something that they want, and the response was overwhelming. This is absolutely something that people want. I have thousands of emails from developers wanting to develop for the platform.

I think that this is something that is incredibly timely in that, there was nothing new announced at E3, and there was a lot of talk about whether consoles are dead. We don?t believe consoles are dead, we just believe that we need to re-think the business model and I think we?ve proved in a very short amount of time that gamers and developers want this.

PCMag: How has the scope of the project changed from when you thought you?would be (maybe)?working with $950,000 to now, when you?re working with almost $9 million?
Ouya1

Uhrman: A majority of the money that we raised is going directly back into building consoles for backers who have pre-ordered the device, building tools for game developers, and to help fund game development when it makes sense.

$950,000 ? that was the amount of money we needed to bring Ouya to market with a certain number of units. As there was more interest through Kickstarter, we went back, talked with our partners, vetted the numbers, and basically increased the number of units that we could ship on day one.

The money that we raised on Kickstarter will allow us to deliver all those units in March and effectively provide features and functionality sooner to developers then we had originally planned.

Continue Reading: Can Ouya really deliver?

300-mile stretch of Gulf Coast on alert for Isaac

TODAY's Al Roker and Matt Lauer report from Key West, Fla., which is being hit by heavy winds and rain. Other parts of the state are experiencing similar conditions, including the site of the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Updated at 9:30 a.m. ET: MIAMI -- Tropical Storm Isaac swirled into the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, threatening to strengthen into a hurricane that could make landfall near Louisiana almost seven years to the day after Katrina struck.

It's "trying to form an eye-like feature" but it's "still a little bit shy of hurricane status," National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said in a morning update.

At 65 mph, Isaac was just a few miles short of hurricane status and that should happen within the next 24 hours, Knabb added.?

The governors of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi declared states of emergency as a hurricane warning went into effect for?a roughly 300-mile stretch of the Gulf Coast in four states from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.

"Tonight is when the conditions will start to go downhill" ahead of landfall Tuesday night, Knabb said.

The National Hurricane Center was no longer forecasting a Category 2 hurricane on landfall, but instead a weaker Category 1. Still, Isaac will probably move slowly inland, possibly dumping as much as 18 inches of rain in places, Knabb said.

"That's going to be the big problem," NBC meteorologist Al Roker said on TODAY. "We're talking about potentially 24 hours of hurricane force winds and heavy rain."

"Storm surge is going to be a big, big problem," he added. "Six to twelve feet above normal as you get to New Orleans. Panama City is about four to seven feet."

Follow Isaac's path with our storm tracker

The hurricane warning area runs from Morgan City, La., westward to Destin, Fla. It includes?New Orleans, which was devastated when Hurricane Katrina swept over the city on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage along the coast. A hurricane hasn't hit the Gulf Coast since Ike in 2008.

NBC's Lester Holt reports from New Orleans, La., where residents and visitors are prepping for Tropical Storm Isaac ?as it threatens to strengthen into a hurricane before landfall.

If Isaac makes landfall a bit west of New Orleans that puts the city in the northeast quadrant of the storm, Roker noted, "and that's the worst place" for storm impact.

With tropical storm force winds that extend 240 miles from its center, Isaac is an unusually wide storm.?

"Impacts will be far to the east and to the west of where it comes ashore," Craig Fugate, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told TODAY.

TODAY's Savannah Guthrie talks to Jefferson Parish president John Young about possible impact of Tropical Storm Isaac on Louisiana, how residents should prepare and when voluntary evacuations will become mandatory.

Reshuffled Republican convention to proceed on Tuesday

Robert Latham, the director of Mississippi's emergency management agency, urged residents to prepare for the storm's possible arrival.

"This is important to remember, this is a huge storm," he said. "I don't have to tell you what a storm like that can do."

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley ordered mandatory evacuations beginning on Monday for residents in low-lying areas along the coast.

Oil companies earlier evacuated workers and cut production at Gulf offshore rigs.

Weather.com reported that areas as far west as extreme southeast Texas should continue to monitor Isaac's progress in case a farther west track materializes.

Alan Diaz / AP

Tropical Storm Isaac rakes the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba as begins to bear down on Florida, where Tampa will be hosting the Republican National Convention.

Some Gulf residents started stocking up on supplies and securing their homes. In New Orleans, long lines formed at some gas stations and in Gulfport, Miss., people crowded supermarkets to buy bottled water and canned food.

On Sunday,?the storm lashed the?Florida Keys?and Miami area with wind and rain. Monday morning, some 80,000 south Florida homes and businesses were without electricity due to downed trees that fell on power lines.

Impact on gas prices?
Forecasters are predicting a more westward track that could bring Isaac over the heart of the U.S. offshore oil patch, which produces about 23 percent of U.S. oil output and 7 percent of its natural gas.

Once ashore, the storm could wreak havoc on low-lying fuel refineries along the Gulf Coast that account for about 40 percent of U.S. refining capacity.

Isaac's path ? whether west toward the Florida Panhandle or east toward New Orleans ? is disputed by European and U.S. weather forecasting models. The Weather Channel's Bryan Norcross has more.

That could send gasoline prices spiking just ahead of the Labor Day holiday, analysts told Reuters. "It's going right in the heart of refinery row," Phil Flynn, an analyst with Price Futures Group in Chicago, said Sunday.

From weather.com: Live updates and analysis

Isaac's westward track meant the worst of its weather missed Tampa, where the Republican National Convention was to open its four-day meeting on Monday -- but official events were delayed until Tuesday because of the storm.

Tampa and much of Florida's west coast and panhandle saw bands of heavy rain on Tuesday morning.

"There's an isolated tornado threat in central Florida up through the northeastern gulf area," Knabb said. "Just because the center is out in the gulf don't think that in Florida there aren't some hazards."

Several governors from Gulf states have altered their plans for the GOP convention. Alabama's Gov. Bentley has canceled his trip, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said he's likely to do so unless the threat from the storm subsides. Florida Gov. Rick Scott gave up a chance to speak.?

NBC's Chuck Todd reports from Tampa, Fla., where delays at the Republican National Convention due to Tropical Storm Isaac are set to disrupt the lead-up to Mitt Romney's acceptance of the Republican nomination for president.

In south Florida, winds from Isaac forced cancellations of hundreds of flights in and out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and other south Florida airports on Sunday.

Isaac moved into the Gulf of Mexico after spending several days sweeping across the Caribbean.

In Haiti, Isaac added to the misery of more than 350,000 survivors of the 2010 earthquake still living in flimsy resettlement camps as water gushed into tents and corrugated plastic shacks were ripped apart by the wind.

Isaac slams tent camps in Haiti

Authorities in the impoverished nation said the storm had killed eight people, including three children.

In the Dominican Republic, officials said three people were missing, and confirmed the death of the mayor of a town near Santo Domingo, who was swept away as he tried to save another person from a flooded river.

No deaths or injuries were reported in Cuba, which got off lightly when the storm crossed its eastern flank instead of raking up the length of the island as originally predicted.

Weather.com, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What is diabetes type 1.5? - Health Niche

In the year 2000, the World Health Organization WHO reckoned that 171 million people all over the world were suffering from diabetes. Experts predict that by the year 2030, there will be approximately 366 million people affected by the disease. Diabetes belongs to a group of metabolic diseases leading to a high and life-threatening blood sugar. Most popularly, the defect is divided into two subcategories: diabetes type one and diabetes type two. Whereas type one is caused by a failure to produce the hormone insulin and often occurs at an early age, type two results from an insulin resistance developing with age. However, there is also an in-between type which has been coined diabetes type 1.5 and which is also known as LADA, i.e. Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults.

LADA: How come?

The in-between type is described as a condition in which diabetes type one develops in an adult age. That is due to the fact that the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells can occur at different rates. If it happens fast, it leads to symptoms at an early age (type one), if it happens slowly, it leads to problems at a later age (LADA). In order to test an emerging diabetes type one, and to avoid a misdiagnosis of type two which also happens at an adult age, it is necessary to conduct antibody tests. People suffering from LADA can show a positive reaction to the antibodies test, people suffering from type two are unlikely to do so. Laboratories own ELISA kits for scientific research in order to get the results.

Avoiding a misdiagnosis

It is estimated that 20 percent of the people officially suffering from diabetes type two actually suffer from type 1.5. In order to optimize the treatment of these people, which does not in every case require an insulin therapy but might also be managed through changes in nutrition and lifestyle, antibody tests should be conducted more than once as it may track the progression of the disease. How far medical research has developed can be seen in the huge amounts of antibody test applications offered at www.antibodies-online.com/.

Figure & Gesture Drawing Tool - Lines and Colors

Figure & Gesture Drawing Tool
Though figure drawing classes and open studio sessions are frequently available at art schools and artist organizations in larger metropolitan areas (see my post on the Directory of Figure Drawing Sessions), it?s not always easy or convenient to find a class nearby.

In 2007 I wrote an article about online or on disc substitutes for figure drawing sessions, Poser, Pose Maniacs and Virtual Pose.

I recently appended the article to bring it up to date, and added reference to the Figure & Gesture Drawing Tool, a website that provides figure drawing reference in the way of timed photographs.

In many of the figure drawing classes and sessions I?ve attended over the years, it?s common practice to start with shorter poses (sometimes called ?croquis?, from a French word meaning ?sketch?), from which gestural drawings are made, capturing the movement and gesture of the pose rather than detail. From there, classes usually move to longer poses, of different lengths for different intentions in the degree of finish the artists are trying to achieve.

In an attempt to simulate this, the Figure & Gesture Drawing Tool allows you to choose a pose interval, from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. after which the page automatically replaces the photo with another pose. You can also advance or step back manually, or use a pause button to choose your own timing. You can also choose clothed or nude models, male or female, or a mix.

There is also a choice for a ?class?, that starts with shorter poses, moves to longer ones and includes breaks.

Though some of the poses are a little oddball (having been supplemented lately with turn of the century cheesecake postcards), and the photos aren?t as consistent or high quality as a dedicated commercial product like Virtual Pose might provide, some of them are quite good, and Figure & Gesture Drawing Tool is free, supported by donations to help defray the cost of bandwidth.

There is also a secondary feature, an Animal Drawing Training Tool.

Figure & Gesture Drawing Tool is provided and maintained by Kim of Piexlovely, a web design firm in Portland, Oregon.

Financial Tools: Knowing When to Use a Pliers or a Wrench ...

In the course of helping families with their investment planning at Secured Retirement Advisors, the discussion often turns towards specific investment product trade-offs. In fact, as a financial advisor, that may very well be the greatest value that I offer: Helping families weigh the trade-offs of the many retirement investment tools offered. In other words, should we choose one product over another. Should we pay more tax today and do a Roth Conversion, or hold off only to potentially pay more tax on our retirement assets in the future? Knowing which financial tool is best suited to their retirement goals is very stressful for people because of the potentially significant impact on their savings, so the families we help are very relieved to have a trusted financial advisor to guide them through the maze of trade-off decisions.

I remember that when I was growing up, my grandfather had a garage with every tool you could possibly imagine. ?He had hundreds of tools, some quite specialized, some more common. My grandfather knew each tool?s specific meaning and purpose. No one tool was better than another but each was best suited for a specific task or purpose. Now, occasionally someone will use the wrong tool for the wrong job. When any tool is used incorrectly, the tool cannot be blamed. Using a pair of pliers to tighten a bolt would be a good example of using a tool for a purpose other than what it was designed for, achieving a less than optimal result. While many of us have probably tried this trick at one time or another, we?ve all found out that by using the pliers to tighten a bolt we ended up causing damage and stripping the bolt. ?The primary purpose of a pliers is not to be used as a wrench. Similarly, hammers have a different but no less important purpose then the pliers. A hammer can be used to build a house or destroy a house, but how that hammer is used is not the hammer?s fault. ?The effectiveness of the hammer depends on the person swinging that tool not the hammer itself.

Similarly, families are confused about the intended purpose of various financial products or tools. ?My belief is that, much like the tools in my grandfathers garage, no one tool is better than another and incorrect application of a financial tool does not make it a ?bad tool?. Yet many of us have been told this product is good, and that product is bad. ?The financial investment?industry is really good at trying to promote those specific products, or tools, that they offer in their inventory so it?s not surprising when a mutual fund company says that an insurance product is bad, or conversely, the insurance product companies say that investment products can be bad. ?There is no such thing as a ?bad? financial tool but you have to understand that every tool has its primary purpose. ?It?s no wonder that many consumers find themselves confused by all of the contradictory comments.

In my experience, all investment products fall into one of three primary purposes:

    1. Capital preservation with the trade-off being growth potential.
    2. Growth potential with the trade-off being investment safety.
    3. Between preservation and pure growth potential, offering better returns with the trade-off being liquidity or level of access to the entire account balance for a longer period of time.

Understanding how each of these financial tools work together is imperative. Making sure that you?re working with a trusted financial advisor like those at Secured Retirement Advisors who understand the different tools and how they are best used is crucial. ?No one tool or category can be used 100% of the time. A retiree that comes into our office with 100% of their money in CDs is making a mistake just as a family nearing retirement that has 100% of their money in aggressive growth mutual funds is making a mistake. ?Most retirees? plans need a balance of both, and because families are often looking at safety and growth, it often makes sense to look at putting aside investments that could require more time.

All financial products have one of three primary trade-offs: safety, growth or liquidity. Understanding how the investment tools are used and how they fit together within your unique, personalized retirement plan is important. ?Working with a comprehensive advisor like those at Secured Retirement Advisors in St. Louis Park, will ensure that all the investment tools are considered. ?We start with the overall plan, not the product. This customized plan will tell us which financial tools are the right ones for you.

Thursday Apple Rumors: iPad Mini to Hit Stores in October

    ? ?

daily apple rumors AAPLHere are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:

Differing Schedules: While Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)?is expected to launch its next generation iPhone and a smaller-screen iPad at a special event on September 12, sources say the two devices will reach consumers at different times, according to International Business Times. The newest iPhone will hit stores nine days after its debut, on September 21, but the iPad Mini may won?t reach store shelves until October 5. The timing of the launches is likely based on anticipated traffic to Apple Stores. The new iPhone has generated substantial interest ? as each new iPhone launch has ? and many potential smartphone buyers have held off purchases waiting for its debut. If the company launches the new iPhone and iPad Mini simultaneously, it might create a crush at its stores and online outlets, leading to frustrated customers. Spacing the launches by several weeks will allow the company to handle initial demand for the iPhone and then gear up again for the launch of the iPad Mini.

Big Payday for Experts: The biggest winners in the patent infringement lawsuit between Apple and Samsung may be the expert witnesses who were paid handsomely by both sides, InformationWeek reports. Apple paid financial analyst Terry Musika $1.75 million to estimate the cost of Samsung?s alleged patent infringement. Musika calculated Apple?s losses at between $2.5 billion and $2.75 billion. Apple demanded damages of at least $2.5 billion in its suit.?Brown University computer graphics professor Andries van Dam received $460,000 for his testimony against Apple, while Harvard professor Woodward Yang garned $220,000 for his testinomy that Apple actually infringed on Samsung patents. Susan Kare, part of the original Macintosh design team, testified that she had confused a Samsung Galaxy smartphone for an iPhone. Kare received $80,000 for her time.

Disappearing Act: First, Apple pulled its ?Genius? television ads from the London Olympics coverage, now it has removed them from the Internet, Ars Technica notes. The ads, which showed Apple Store Genius Bar employees assisting customers with their Apple devices in a variety of improbable situations, was widely criticized for painting Apple customers as ?clueless.? Other critics said the ads didn?t measure up to the company?s previous high standards. The ads stopped running as the Olympic games neared their conclusion, but remained available on the company?s website as well as at?Google?s (NASDAQ:GOOG) YouTube. The company has not withdrawn other television advertisements, some dating back years, from the web.
