The question about differences in dietary patterns associated with beer, wine, and spirits is still unresolved. We used diet data from 423 middle-aged males of the STANISLAS Study. Using adjusted values for covariates, we observed a negative significant association between increasing alcohol intakes and the consumption of milk, yogurt, and fresh/uncured cheese, sugar and confectionery, vegetables and fruits, and a significant positive relationship with cheese, meat and organs, pork-butcher's meat, and potatoes. In addition, the first dietary pattern identified by factor analysis (characterized a more prudent diet) was inversely related to alcohol intakes. Conversely, when analyzing daily consumption of specific food groups and diet patterns according to beverage preference (wine, beer, and spirits), no significant difference was observed. In conclusion, in this sample of middle-aged French males, there was a linear trend between increasing alcohol intakes and worsening of quality of diet, while no difference was observed according to beverage preference.

1. Introduction

Alcohol is linked to an extensively documented J-shaped dose-effect curve, with light to moderate consumption reducing cardiovascular and overall mortality, whereas excessive drinking has the opposite effect [1?3]. Moreover, drinking pattern (heavy episodic or binge drinking versus a steady pattern of consumption [4, 5]), type of alcoholic beverage (wine, beer, spirits), and various related lifestyle and sociocultural factors may account for differences in health benefits or adverse effects associated with alcohol drinking. In the field of nutrition, prior research supports that increasing levels of alcohol consumption are associated with poorer dietary patterns [6?9]. Generally, increased alcohol intake was associated with higher consumption of potatoes and animal products such as meat, meat products, and pork-butcher's meat and low consumption of dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and fresh/uncured cheese, fruits and vegetables, and pastries and cookies. In addition, variation in diet associated with the preferred drink may explain why a type of alcoholic beverage seems to have specific effects on ischemic heart disease mortality. Some studies in Danish or American populations found that wine drinkers tend to have a healthier lifestyle profile (including diet) than beer or spirit drinkers [10?12]. However, in Navarra (Spain) dietary patterns between wine, beer, or spirit drinkers did not significantly differ [13]. Even within the same country, geographical factors could play an important role; for example, in France, living area, diet behaviors, and alcoholic beverage preference were strongly associated in the study of Ruidavets et al. [9].

Since data about French are limited, this present study aims to describe the associations of alcohol consumption and alcoholic-beverage preferences with dietary patterns measured in term of food groups and pattern in 423 middle-aged males living in Eastern France.

2. Material and Methods

2.1. Subjects

This work is based on the STANISLAS Family Study, a 10-year longitudinal study conducted since 1994 on 1,006 families selected at the Center for Preventive Medicine of Vandoeuvre-l?s-Nancy (east of France) [14, 15]. These families (2 parents and at least 2 children between 10 and 26 years) were identified from the files of the State Health Insurance Fund and invited every 5 years for checkups at the Center for Preventive Medicine. Due to the design of the STANISLAS Family study, subjects were of French origin and were free from acute or chronic diseases such as stroke, myocardial infarction, or cancer. At baseline, a random subsample of these families (about 45%) had to complete a 3-day food-intake diary. We performed this cross-sectional analysis on data of the entrance checkup (1994-95) from the sample of 423 fathers, who completed the 3-day food-intake diary and who had available covariate measurements (aged: 30?60 years, median age: 42 years, alcohol intakes: 0 and 112?g/day). Each subject gave written informed consent for participating in this study, which was approved by the ?Comit? Consultatif de Protection des Personnes dans la Recherche Biom?dicale de Lorraine? (France). In addition, we certify that all applicable governmental regulations concerning the ethical use of human volunteers were followed during this research.

2.2. Dietary Assessment and Data Collection

Dietary intake was assessed with a 3D dietary record, which was completed during 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day assigned at random for each individual [16]. All the food and drinks consumed at home and away were recorded in a 3-day diary. Each day of the diary comprised of six meal slots labelled: breakfast, midmorning, lunch, midafternoon, dinner, and ?late evening and night.? During the first part of the checkup, the subjects received instructions from a dietitian on the procedures for completing the dietary record and measuring food portions. Detailed guidance notes were provided at the beginning of the diary to assist subjects in describing portion sizes using g, ml, or household measures units. One week later, during the second part of the checkup, with the presence of the subject, the diary was checked, completed, coded, and quantified by the dietitian using colored photographs of foods, each with 3 different portion sizes. Two intermediate and extreme portions could also be chosen, yielding a total of 7 choices for estimating quantities consumed [17].

The daily consumption of 18 generic main food groups was computed as the mean value of the 3 days: milk, yogurt and fresh/uncured cheese, cheese, eggs, fish, poultry, meat and organs, pork-butcher?s meat, snacks, cereals and pasta, bread and toast, pastries and cookies, sugar and confectionery, pulses, potatoes, other vegetables than potatoes, fruits, and added fats and vegetable oils. By using data of the 3-day diary, total alcohol was calculated as the sum of ethanol in all the types of specific alcoholic beverages and expressed in grams of pure alcohol per day using the French Food Composition Database of INRA [18].

Data about lifestyle were collected by using relevant questionnaires [14], including information concerning smoking, and education. Weight and height were measured while the participants were standing in light clothing without shoes. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as weight (kilogram) divided by height (meter) squared.

2.3. Statistical Analysis

Statistical analyses were performed using SAS software (version 9.1; SAS Institute Inc, Cary, NC, USA). Subjects were ranked according to their alcohol consumption in 4 groups: (non-)occasional drinkers (0?2?g/day), 3?22?g/day (2.0 standard drinks), 23?44?g/day (2 to 3.9 standard drinks), and 45?112?g/day (4 to 10 standard drinks). Intake of 22, 44, and 112?g of alcohol correspond to the consumption of , , and 1.3 liter of wine; , 1, and 2.6 liters of beer; 2, 4, and 10 standard drinks of spirit, respectively. In addition, drinkers (consuming 3?112?g/day) were classified according to their beverage preference in 4 categories (wine preference, beer preference, spirit preference, and no preference). A preference for a specific beverage type was defined as an intake of pure alcohol 50% of the total alcohol intake. A drinker with no preference was defined as a person whose intake of none of the specific beverage types exceeded 50%. No individual preferred two beverages equally (50% versus 50%).

Exploratory principle component analysis (PCA) was performed to define dietary patterns by using data from the 18 main food groups [19], followed by orthogonal (varimax) rotation to assist in interpretation of the factors and to ensure that the factors were uncorrelated. PCA aggregates specific food groups on the basis of the degree to which items in the dataset are correlated with one another. All variables in PCA were adjusted for nonalcohol energy intakes. Factors with an eigenvalue greater than 1 were retained. Variables with factor loadings having absolute values of 0.20 were used in interpreting the factors. Scores were computed for rotated factors as the sum of products of observed variables multiplied by their factor loading.

ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare differences between groups. Firstly, baseline characteristics of the participants were computed and compared according to alcohol intake and alcoholic beverage patterns. Secondly, relationships between alcohol intake and diet were assessed by using ANOVA with the hypothesis of linear trend and after adjustment for age, nonalcohol energy intakes, cigarette smoking, body mass index, education, and season. Thirdly, associations of diet with pattern of alcoholic beverage consumption were tested using ANOVA after adjustment for age, alcohol consumption, nonalcohol energy intake, cigarette smoking, body mass index, education, and season. (Non-)occasional drinkers and drinkers with no preference were excluded from this latter analysis. was accepted as significant.

3. Results

The characteristics (especially the covariates used in ANOVA) of the 423 males are shown in Table 1. A positive significant association between increasing alcohol intakes and proportion of smokers and number of cigarettes smoked per day was found. Wine drinkers were older than beer and spirit drinkers and consumed more pure alcohol per day. Spirits drinkers had significant higher body mass index and higher education status.

Table 1: Characteristics of the sample of 423 adult males according to alcohol consumption and beverage preferencea.

Two major dietary patterns with eigenvalue greater than 1 were identified by factor analysis using varimax rotation (Table 2). The first factor (eigenvalue = 1.24) was characterized by higher consumption of sugar and confectionery, added fat including vegetal oil, fruits, vegetables, milk, fish, poultry, and eggs and lower consumption of meat and organ, pork-butcher's meat, and pastries and cookies. The second factor (eigenvalue = 1.06) was associated with higher consumption of pastries and cookies, and snacks and lower consumption of pork-butcher's meat, cheese, and bread and toast.

Table 2: Factor-loading matrix for the major factors (diet pattern) identified by using food group intakesa.

Table 3 presents the consumption of food groups across the 4 categories of alcohol intake. By using adjusted values for age, nonalcohol energy intake, cigarette smoking, body mass index, education and season, we observed a negative significant association between increasing alcohol intakes and the consumption of milk, yogurt and fresh/uncured cheese, sugar and confectionery, pastries and cookies, vegetables and fruit, and a significant positive relationship with cheese, meat and organs, pork-butcher's meat, and potatoes. In line with the above cited data, the first dietary pattern was inversely related to alcohol intakes () and there was a significant association between alcohol intake and the second diet pattern (): heavy drinkers having lower value of pattern.

Table 3: Daily intake of foods and nutrients according to alcohol consumption in the sample of 423 adult malesa.

When analyzing daily consumption of specific food groups and diet patterns according to beverage preference (wine, beer, and spirits), after adjustment for age, nonalcohol energy intake, alcohol intakes, cigarette smoking, body mass index, education, and season (data not shown), differences for all food groups were not statistically significant. An exception was the consumption of poultry which was significantly higher in the spirit drinkers group (). Likewise, diet patterns were not significantly related to beverage preferences: , , and () for the first diet pattern and , , and () for the second; for wine, beer, and spirit drinkers, respectively.

4. Discussion

In this study, increased alcohol intake was associated with higher consumption of potatoes and animal products such as meat, meat products, and pork-butcher's meat and low consumption of dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and fresh/uncured cheese, and fruits and vegetables. In addition, pastries and cookies and sugar and confectionaries were less consumed by alcohol drinkers. The significant associations of poorer dietary practice with alcohol consumption were underlined previously in various populations around the world [6?9].

In line with our above results, the first dietary pattern was inversely related to alcohol intake. Previous studies using a dietary score based on components representing different aspects of a healthy diet such as the Healthy Eating Index in USA (HEI) [20] or the Diet Quality Index in France [9] showed that as alcohol quantity increased, diet index worsened. When cluster analysis or factor analysis was used to search for dietary patterns in various populations, patterns identified and labeled ?alcohol and meat products? [21], ?alcohol users? [22], ?alcohol and convenience foods? [23], or ?convenience food/beer? [24] reflected mainly the aggregation of alcoholic beverages with higher consumption of meat and processed meat and lower consumption of low-fat dairy products, desserts, fruits, and vegetables.

While levels of alcohol consumption were significantly and inversely associated with dietary quality in our sample of healthy adult men, food consumption according to wine, beer, or spirit preference did not significantly differ (except for poultry; spirits drinkers having the highest consumption). Likewise, the first diet pattern identified by factor analysis was not associated with beverage preference. Despite the growing number of studies in the literature, the question about differences in dietary patterns associated with beer, wine, and spirits is still unresolved. Contrary to our results, in studies conducted in United States, Australia or northern Europe [7, 10, 11, 25?27], wine drinkers tended to report healthier dietary patterns: more fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, olive oil, and fewer red or fried meats, sausage, bacon, and fried potatoes versus other groups of drinkers. In Denmark, by using information on number, type of item, and total charge from transactions in supermarkets, wine buyers made more purchases of healthy food items than people who bought beer [28]. Conversely, in studies conducted in Spain or in Italy, no relevant difference in healthy foods consumption and/or in adherence to Mediterranean diet was shown [13, 29, 30]. The study of Ruidavets et al. [9] on 3 population samples of Northern, North-eastern, and South-western France (MONICA study), showed that wine drinkers had healthier diet compared to other drinkers or abstainers. However, in this last French study, the living area played a significant role in the dieting behaviour and also in alcoholic beverage preferences since all associations became nonsignificant after additional adjustment for this parameter. These results are in agreement with the North-South differences for relationships between beverage behaviours and diet patterns.

Discordance of results between North and South areas may be due to the fact that in a specific population (area), various factors aggregate with drinking habits such as regional culture, socioeconomic status, diet and beverage habits, food and beverage availability, food and beverage purchases, attitude and knowledge about potential effects of wine, and other foods on heath. For instance, in Denmark or in California wine drinkers have a higher level of education and higher income, better psychological functioning, and better subjective health than people who do not drink wine [31?33]. Conversely, in Spain or in Italy, wine is largely consumed by all social classes because it is economically affordable for all [13]. In addition, population interests with food and health may be very different: the Northern European and American populations are more inclined to associate food with health and not with pleasure, conversely to French people [34].

The present study has some limitations and strengths. First, among the number of method of dietary assessment reported in the literature, the 3-day dietary record (with the 5-day instrument) is considered as one of the reference methods without recall bias, limiting the accuracy or completeness of the information [35]. Moreover, an experimenter reviewed the diaries with the participants using pictures of dishes in order to estimate quantities and clarified any ambiguities or missing data. However, the 3-day dietary record did not allow taking into account the long term variability in comparison to alternative methods such as Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) that better measure long term diet. Second, although factor analysis takes into account the high intercorrelations of foods within the diet, this approach involved several arbitrary decisions such as the component of food groups, the number of factors extracted, the rotation method, the label of factors. Third, respondents? participation in this study was on a volunteer basis, therefore the study subjects may be more health conscious than the general population. As for other epidemiological studies, misreporting of diet, particularly consumption of foods regarded as ?unhealthy,? is a major concern when looking for determinants of food intakes. Moreover, the participants in this study were middle-aged men from a specific area of France (the east) where beer drinkers denote a particular population group. These findings may not generalize to younger/older individuals, women, or individuals living in other regions. Fourth, since important differences between the beverage prefererer?s were highlighted (wine drinkers had by far the highest alcohol intake and were oldest; beer drinkers had the lowest BMI, smoked the most, with the lowest education); we adjusted for these covariate in the dietary pattern analyses. Another limitation of our study is the low number men having beer or spirit preferences and consequently the possible lack of statistical power.

To conclude, in our study, there was a linear trend between increasing alcohol intakes and worsening of quality of diet. Conversely, in agreement with other data obtained in the south of Europe, food intakes did not significantly differ according to wine, beer or spirit preference. Taking into account limitations due to the small sample of beer and spirit drinkers, this similarity in dietary patterns according to beverage preferences don?t support the hypothesis that the positive cardiovascular effects reported in the literature for wine could be attributable to an overall healthier dietary pattern of wine drinkers in particular in this sample from Eastern France.

How can I fix my iPhone 3g 4.2.1? Tried to jailbreak with redsn0w and now it's having troubles.

I just got my first smart phone (iPhone 3g 4.2.1) and wanted to use it on StraightTalk.

I read that in order to unlock the phone for carriers besides AT&T, I had to raise the phone's baseband to the iPad baseband. I was following the instructions on this site, and it said installing the iPad baseband was "currently the only way to unlock 05.14 and 05.15 basebands". That may have changed since then.

That didn't work, and I tried (to no avail) to restore it with iTunes. I ended up stuck with the "Connect USB to iTunes" screen. I looked for help on Reddit, and followed this advice:

Either download the 4.2.1 ispw file for iPhone 3G or locate the ispw file inside your iTunes and place it on your desktop.

Got it (iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw). It takes a long time to download, but isn't hard to find.

Now try and get your iPhone into dfu.

I was stuck in the "Connect to iTunes" page, but this guide helped me get into DFU mode (or so I thought)

Once in dfu open the newest version of redsn0w.

Got redsn0w 0.9.14b2 (OSX) from iphone-dev

Once open click extras, then select ispw. Choose the ispw 4.2.1 on your desk top. Now a pop up will state resn0w will use the 4.2.1 for the remainder.

So far so good!

Select back, then jailbreak. Since you are already in dfu it should skip the step where it shows you how to do it. Now this should get you out of recovery.

Since I heard there was no need to upgrade to iPad baseband, I selected "Downgrade from iPad baseband". Apparently I wasn't in DFU mode, since it gave me steps to enter DFU mode... dangit.

Screen flashed white, then said "Downloading Jailbreak Data?", and a lot of terminal readout showed up on the screen. Now a running pineapple showed up with a status bar under it. Now it's stuck on the apple logo screen, and has been for several minutes. After being stuck about 2 hours, I turned it off, tried to turn it on, and got stuck with the apple logo screen.

Also, the person on Reddit said I didn't need to unlock the iPhone to use it with Straight Talk. Is that true? I talked to some Straight Talk people in a store, and they said I couldn't use iPhone with them, and everything I read said I had to unlock it.

So now, I beseech you for your help

The most my phone will do is show an apple logo when it powers on. iTunes doesn't register that it's plugged in. Por favor help; what should I do?

No tax, no blessing: German church insists on levy

BERLIN (AP) ? The road to heaven is paved with more than good intentions for Germany's 24 million Catholics. If they don't pay their religious taxes, they will be denied sacraments, including weddings, baptisms and funerals.

A decree issued last week by the country's bishops cast a spotlight on the longstanding practice in Germany and a handful of other European countries in which governments tax registered believers and then hand over the money to the religious institutions.

In Germany, the surcharge for Catholics, Protestants and Jews is a surcharge of up to nine percent on their income tax bills ? or about ?56 ($72) a month for a single person earning a pre-tax monthly salary of about ?3,500 ($4,500).

For religious institutions, struggling to maintain their congregations in a secular society where the Protestant Reformation began 500 years ago, the tax revenues are vital.

The Catholic Church in Germany receives about ?5 billion ($6.5 billion) annually from the surcharge. For Protestants, the total is just above ?4 billion ($5.2 billion). Donations, in turn, represent a far smaller share of the churches' income than in the United States.

With rising prices and economic uncertainty, however, more and more Catholics and Protestants are opting to save their money and declare to tax authorities they are no longer church members, even if they still consider themselves believers.

"I quit the church already in 2007," Manfred Gonschor, a Munich-based IT-consultant, said. "It was when I got a bonus payment and realized that I could have paid myself a nice holiday alone on the amount of church tax that I was paying on it."

Gonschor added he was also "really fed up with the institution and its failures."

Such defections have hit the Catholic Church especially hard ? it has lost about 181,000 tax-paying members in 2010 and 126,000 a year later, according to official figures. Protestants, who number about 24 million nationwide, lost 145,000 registered members in Germany in 2010, the most recent year from which figures are available.

But the figures include some people who still want to baptize their children, take communion on major religious holidays, marry in a religious ceremony and receive Christian burials.

The group We are Church, which claims to represent tens of thousands of grassroots Catholics, said many Germans stop paying the tax because they disagree with the church's policies or simply want to save money ? not because they have lost their faith.

"I haven't quit because I still think that I might want to get married in a church one day, even though I know that's absurd," said Anna Ainsley, a 31-old-year banker and a Protestant from Frankfurt. "But when I see my tax declaration, then I think every year that I should finally quit."

Those are the people that Germany's Catholic bishops had in mind when they decreed on Sept. 20 that stopping the payment of religious taxes was "a serious lapse" and those who did so would then be excluded from a range of church activities.

"This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Church," the bishops said in a statement. "It is not possible to separate the spiritual community of the Church from the institutional Church."

Wavering Catholics will now be sent letters reminding them of the consequences of avoiding the church tax, including losing access to all sacraments.

"Maybe you haven't considered the consequences of your decision and would like to reverse this step," a draft of the letter states.

Protestants have taken a less stern position, saying non-taxpayers are still welcome to attend services and take communion. But becoming a godparent, getting married in a church or taking a job in church-affiliated institutions such as hospitals or kindergartens are off-limits to those who stop paying their taxes.

Switzerland and Austria also tax Catholic and Protestant church members. In Denmark, the State Lutheran church collects a tax from its members. Members of Sweden's Lutheran Church pay around 1 percent of their income, collected by the national tax authorities, just as in Finland.

In Italy, tax-payers have the choice of diverting a small part of their income taxes to religious institutions, including the Catholic Church and the country's Jewish community, but the contribution is voluntary.

In none of those countries have been the churches take such a firm stand against dropouts.

So far German courts have stood by the bishops' decision. This week the country's top administrative court threw out a lawsuit against the archdiocese of Freiburg by retired theologian Hartmut Zapp, who has spent years fighting the Catholic church over the tax.

Zapp argued that a Catholic should be free to stop paying but remain a member of the spiritual community and that his religious beliefs could not possibly be tied to a tax payment.

The archdiocese responded in a statement that "those who lack solidarity bid farewell to the community of believers."

The tax issue presents moral and ethical dilemmas to millions of German believers, even dividing couples.

Sonja Trott, a 34-year-old teacher from Munich, said she quit the Catholic Church 15 years ago because she no longer believed in its teachings.

"Now I'd like to convince my husband that he also should quit, that would save us a lot of money," she said.

But her husband Christoph, a sales executive, says he cannot imagine refusing to pay on moral grounds because it would seem like a betrayal of his faith. "I don't like paying it, but I do because I fear the step of quitting the church."

He would prefer to donate part of the money to charities "but well, in Germany the payment determines whether I'm allowed to consider myself a Catholic or not."

For other Germans, it's unethical to stop paying the tax but continue to use the church when it suits them.

Christine Solf, a Munich-based consultant, says she doesn't attend services regularly but appreciates the church's charitable work. For her, church membership is also a family tradition.

"I know people who quit for financial reasons but then still want their children to be baptized. That's not OK in my opinion," she said.

Rule of Law Can Rid the World of Poverty | Open Society Foundations

Poverty is on the retreat. Despite the global economic downturn, the World Bank and UN reported this year that the number of people living in extreme poverty has dropped in every region of the world for the first time since record keeping began. Though progress on the UN?s Millennium Development Goals has been uneven, we should be heartened that we have already reached, three years before the target date of 2015, the first of these eight goals?that of halving the number of people still living on less than $1 a day. However, we risk allowing these gains to come undone if we fail to strengthen the rule of law in developing countries.

Without basic legal empowerment, the poor live an uncertain existence, in fear of deprivation, displacement and dispossession. A juvenile is wrongfully detained and loses time in school; village land is damaged by a mining company without compensation; an illiterate widow is denied the inheritance she is entitled to and is forced on to the streets with her children. By what means can individuals and communities protect their rights in daily life?

Tens of millions of people live without a legal form of identity, such as a birth certificate. This identity is the cornerstone of justice. Without it, one may be denied opportunities to overcome poverty, including access to immunisations, school, land deeds and welfare. One of the first MDG 2.0 targets? should be reducing statelessness and providing universal legal identity: the enactment and enforcement of legislation ensuring every citizen has universal access to a documented legal identity and is registered at birth.

But legislation is not enough, which is why the second and third targets should concern awareness and access. In developed countries, even those accused of heinous crimes are apprised of their legal rights, and rightfully so. Yet the vast majority of people living in poverty do not even know their rights. Governments must implement concrete measures, or enable civil society to do so, making sure the poor are fully aware of rights under the law.

The targets must include safeguards and regulations to ensure that everybody, regardless of background or circumstances, has full access to the formal justice system. Special attention should also be given to women, as well as to vulnerable groups such as the landless, slum dwellers, sex workers, pre-trial prisoners and juvenile offenders. In many places, laws exist on paper to protect the vulnerable from exploitation, yet informal norms and institutions hold sway, and all too often, these norms and institutions work against the poor and vulnerable, women especially. Where the formal legal system is itself corrupt, there should also be mechanisms such as alternative dispute resolution, which work to provide justice outside the courts.

These need not be costly solutions. We have already seen how they might work in places such as Bangladesh, where civil society organisations like BRAC have strengthened the legal rights of the poor by training thousands of ?barefoot lawyers? in poor communities.

Events in Tahrir Square and beyond have sparked optimism about a global democratic resurgence. But at the same time, there is fear of instability and lawlessness. Let us not forget that in 2015, 1 billion people will still be living in extreme poverty. A hard road still lies ahead. Strengthening the rule of law is more important than ever. NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? During what appeared to be an attempted late-night burglary, a man fatally shot a masked teenager in self-defense outside his neighbor's house and then discovered it was his son, state police said.

Police said 15-year-old Tyler Giuliano was shot at about 1 a.m. Thursday in New Fairfield, a town along the New York line just north of Danbury.

A woman who was alone in the house believed someone was breaking in and called the teen's father, who lives next door, and he grabbed a gun and went outside to investigate, police said.

The father confronted someone wearing a black ski mask and black clothing and then fired his gun when the person went at him with a shiny weapon in his hand, police said.

When police officers arrived, the teen was lying in the driveway of the woman's home with gunshot wounds and the father was sitting on the grass. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

"All in all it's a tragedy," state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said.

The teen's father, Jeffrey Giuliano, a fifth-grade teacher in town, hasn't returned a message seeking comment on what happened.

The teenager was a student at New Fairfield High School, a short walk from the neighborhood where he was killed.

Superintendent of Schools Alicia Roy sent parents an email about what happened, The News-Times of Danbury reported.

"Our district has experienced a tragedy that has affected us deeply," she wrote, adding that students weren't told of the killing because all the facts weren't clear.

No charges have been filed. State police are investigating. An autopsy on the boy is planned.

Canines against cancer YWCA benefit | WLFI - Lafayette, Indiana

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Columbian Park was packed with pups Wednesday as the Lafayette Park Department and the Dog Park Association of Greater Lafayette presented the?11th?annual "Hike With Your Hound Event."

The walk was held to raise money and awareness for a worthy cause. Proceeds this year benefited the YWCA Women's Cancer Program.

Event organizers and participants said it's not only a blast for dogs and owners, but the money raised will help women in the community protect against, and battle cancer.

"It's for a good reason and for a good cause and it's also very fun," Participant Robert Schuman said. "That's why I like it, and I come as much as I possibly can."

"We're just a couple days away from breast cancer awareness month, so I'm encouraging all women who need to get their mammograms to get out there and do that," YWCA Executive Director Debi DeBruyn said.

Besides serving as a canine social, "Hike With Your Hound" had several contests including best trick, waggiest tail, dog and owner look-alike, and best breast cancer advocate costume.

Video: Jimmy Hoffa buried in Detroit backyard?

>>> it is one of the most famous and enduring american mysteries, what happened to jimmy hoffa , the teamster's boss who went missing without a trace in 19 # 5. well, now investigators are back on the case just outside detroit. and nbc's john yang is there.

>> reporter: could these six-foot cylinders with dark, muddy water , six feet in diameter, hold the answer to the mystery of jimmy hoffa ? this man said he saw the body buried years ago, and where ground-penetrating radar showed something, two feet deep.

>> we're just doing our job, we had credible information and had to follow through with it.

>> reporter: police said when he disappeared in 1975 , there was a different shed, the floor was dirt, covered with concrete. it is about 20 miles from where hoffa was last seen, apparently lured by two mob figures, since then, he has been famous, and his organized crime ties and federal court convictions in the '60s. jack nicoleson portrayed him in the 1992 movie, hoffa .

>> he was a real enemy of american society and a real threat to this country.

>> reporter: legends also surround his death, some saying his final resting place has been a giant stadium in new jersey, or detroit's center.

>> the stories are huge.

>> reporter: and so is the search, in 2003 , investigators dug under a swimming pool in northern michigan , in 2004 , they ripped up the floor of a detroit house . and in 2006 , they tore down a michigan horse barn. each time, they found nothing. investigators hope they will know next week whether the 37-year search for hoffa could finally be over. john yang , nbc news, roseville, michigan.

Does it make sense to open a truck wash along a major highway and then open it up for all trucks passing by? Indeed, you are probably wondering the same question, which was actually asked of me not long ago. Here is my answer; it depends. Ha ha ha, yes, that's always the way it is, isn't it?

LG Display countersues Samsung over OLED patent infringement

Samsung 55-inch OLED TV at CES

The strained relationship between the two tentpoles of Korea's tech industry is starting to wear, now that LG Display has counter-sued its local rival over OLED patents. Earlier this month, Samsung filed for an injunction accusing its frenemy of stealing secrets, but LG is claiming instead that it's the victim. If successful, Lucky Goldstar would seek a ban on devices including the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note on the pair's home turf -- so, yeah, this one looks like it's going to run and run.

94% Side by Side

For film tech nerds the world over, this documentary about the advent of digital filmmaking and what it means for the old school film purists is an engaging must-see. Keanu Reeves narrates and interviews an impressive roster of directors, cinematographers, editors, actors, and execs through this highly technical history and many of the subjects are truly game. I think their candidness is largely due to Reeves being there. Most seem to feel really comfortable around him, which is essential to getting some of the gold that comes out of the likes of Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher in particular. Editor Anne Coates, the 86-year-old editor of such classics as LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) and OUT OF SIGHT (1998) brings a refreshing and surprising perspective. Just when you expect the film vs. digital argument to have lines drawn depending on age, Ms. Coates shows a delightful openness to the new technology. This is an astounding time capsule piece which demonstrates how truly far we've come in digital image quality, particularly just in the past few years. There are times where you'll go back and forth about how you feel, because ultimately, both sides make great points. I couldn't believe how terrible some of the earlier digital films looked (TADPOLE or CHUCK AND BUCK anyone?). This may feel really too inside baseball for the layperson, but if you have any interest in how we experience filmed stories, this is essential viewing.
