South Korea's Auto-Turret Can Kill a Man in the Dead of Night From Three Clicks

The 2.5-mile wide demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea is the most heavily contested stretch of land on the planet. And if the massive contingent of troops, tanks, bunkers, and land mines weren't enough of a trespassing deterrent, this eagle-eyed auto-targeting gun turret should do the trick. More »

Now That Windows 8 And The Surface Tablet Have Launched, Microsoft Turns Its Focus To Developers

build_microsoft_2012_logoMicrosoft's heavy schedule of launches and events this month, including the Windows 8 and Surface events in New York last week and its Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco on Monday, is set to reach its end with the Build developer conference on the company's huge Redmond, WA campus starting on Tuesday. In some way, this is almost symbolic, given that the future of the Windows 8 platform is now really in the hands of the developers.

(AP) ? Alabama brushed aside a top SEC West challenger and roared on to an even tougher one.

AJ McCarron passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns, and the top-ranked Crimson Tide reached the end zone on its first three possessions in a muscle-flexing 38-7 victory over No. 13 Mississippi State on Saturday night.

That blazing start indicated Bama wasn't looking ahead to No. 6 LSU in a national game rematch ? at least until the second quarter.

"We felt like we had something to prove, because they felt like they could come in our house and beat us," Tide linebacker CJ Mosley said. "As a defense we did a great job of stopping the run and making them try to beat us with the pass."

Point made. The Tide (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) quickly turned the meeting of unbeaten SEC West teams into a mismatch with a 21-0 lead barely a minute into the second quarter.

"We certainly had a lot of respect for Mississippi State," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "You don't get to be 7-0 by accident. I think it was important for us to get off to a fast start in this game, preparing yourself to fight a 15-round fight, knowing that you're going to have to take the fight to them in the early rounds.

"You can't necessarily win the fight in the first round, but you can certainly lose it. I think we had the right amount of energy and the right physical energy to play in the game."

The Bulldogs (7-1, 3-1) came in averaging 36.7 points but didn't score until the final minutes. They had been leading the nation in turnover margin but lost two fumbles and an interception.

McCarron completed 16 of 23 passes before sitting out the fourth quarter. He headed to the locker room briefly early in the quarter with a bruised back but returned to the sideline. Saban said he could have returned and will be fine for the LSU game.

The Tide has now won the past five meetings and this one turned into more of the same, despite considerably more hype.

"They're No. 1 for a reason ? they don't make mistakes," Mississippi State cornerback Johnthan Banks said. "I haven't played a team like that since I've been in college. I have great respect for AJ McCarron. He doesn't make mistakes."

The Bulldogs had started 7-0 for only the second time in program history. Instead of proving they were legitimate SEC contenders, this game showed they have a ways to go.

McCarron hit Kenny Bell in stride for a 57-yard touchdown to cap a drive that started at Alabama's 4. He then found tight end Michael Williams for a 9-yard score early in the second quarter.

His 18 touchdowns tie him with John Parker Wilson for second-most in school history, two behind Greg McElroy's single-season record.

T.J. Yeldon rushed for 84 yards on 10 carries, including an 11-yard touchdown. The subs tacked on two touchdowns after turnovers in the fourth quarter.

It wasn't the finish that mattered the most, but the start.

"This is a big game for us and we knew that they were going to come out really believing they could win the game," Tide center Barrett Jones said. "And that's when we knew we had to come out and play hard in the beginning. We really started fast. That's something we talked about all week."

Alabama held the SEC's leading rusher, LaDarius Perkins, to 38 yards on 15 carries after he came in with three straight 100-yard efforts. The Tide outgained Mississippi State 414-256.

Tyler Russell completed 15 of 30 passes for 169 yards but threw just his second interception of the season and took a number of hits from the nation's top defense.

"I think our guys are disappointed. They came in and expected to win the game," Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said. "And probably nobody else out there thought we would. And I love our fans and how they believed in us. We didn't just believe, I think our guys expected us to win."

Alabama's 24-0 halftime lead held until Mississippi State had a muffed punt and another fumble in the fourth. Then Alabama's backup quarterbacks came in to convert those mistakes into touchdowns.

Phillip Ely hit Eddie Lacy for a 27-yarder and then Blake Sims led another scoring drive capped with a 3-yard touchdown run by freshman Kenyan Drake.

The Bulldogs finally scored on backup quarterback Dak Prescott's 2-yard touchdown pass to Robert Johnson with 4:39 left in the game.

Mississippi State couldn't cash in on two other scoring chances before the game really got out of hand. First, Dee Milliner blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt on the opening drive.

Then, Russell drove the Bulldogs 97 yards from their own 2-yard line before Robert Lester picked off a pass in the end zone late in the third.

"Things we've done right all year long, we couldn't do that against the No. 1 team in the country," Mississippi State linebacker Cameron Lawrence said. "These boys are the real deal.

"I feel like we played our worst game and Alabama capitalized on our mistakes. "

Mississippi State managed to slow down Alabama's offense for a stretch after getting bullied in the first 17 minutes but couldn't find many holes in the defense.

The Tide has two shutouts and has lost two more in the final minutes with the reserves on the field.

Study finds diabetes raises levels of proteins linked to Alzheimer's features

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Growing evidence suggests that there may be a link between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, but the physiological mechanisms by which diabetes impacts brain function and cognition are not fully understood. In a new study published in Aging Cell, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies show, for the first time, that diabetes enhances the development of aging features that may underlie early pathological events in Alzheimer's.

Specifically, the Salk team found increases in two hallmarks of Alzheimer's-accumulations of amyloid beta (Abeta) and tau protein-in the brains of diabetic mice, especially in cells surrounding blood vessels. Abeta, the misfolded peptide that is thought in part to cause Alzheimer's disease, aggregated inside astrocytes, star-shaped brain cells that, upon interaction with Abeta, release inflammatory molecules that can destroy neurons. Previously, this had not been shown in mouse models of type 1 diabetes (T1D).

"Our study supports and extends the links between diabetes, aging and Alzheimer's," says senior author Pamela Maher, a senior staff scientist in Salk's Laboratory of Cellular Neurobiology. "We show that type 1 diabetes increases vascular-associated amyloid beta buildup in the brain and causes accelerated brain aging."

The findings suggest that the neurovascular system may be a good candidate for new therapeutic targets to treat Alzheimer's in the early stages of the disease.

Alzheimer's and diabetes are two diseases that are increasing at an alarming rate within the U.S. population. Alzheimer's affects one in 10 Americans over 65 years of age and nearly 50 percent of those over 85. Similarly, more than 8 percent of Americans (approximately 26 million people) have diabetes, with the vast majority of those individuals being over 60.

Maher says her team is uncertain of the precise mechanism behind the increase in Abeta and tau in the mouse brain, but their data suggest that changes in astrocytes, as well as other pro-inflammatory processes and the bonding of proteins with sugar molecules (called non-enzymatic glycation), may contribute.

"Astrocytes play a key role in maintaining nerve cells in the brain," says lead study author Antonio Currais, a postdoctoral researcher at Salk. "Both chronic peripheral inflammation and increased non-enzymatic glycation are associated with diabetes, and these changes may act on the brain to alter astrocyte function, which eventually leads to Alzheimer's-like changes."

All nerve cells are closely connected to blood vessels, as they need nutrients---- especially glucose (sugar) and oxygen---- provided by the blood in order to function. Astrocytes facilitate the transfer of nutrients between blood vessels and cells. The buildup of Abeta at sites where astrocytes interact with blood vessels suggest that this could impair the transfer of nutrients. The type of Abeta localization seen in Maher's mouse models is also found in human Alzheimer's patients

To examine the contributions of diabetes to Alzheimer's-related pathology in the aged brain, the Salk researchers induced T1D in two sets of mouse models. One set, known as SAMP8 mice, undergo accelerated aging and develop early deterioration in learning and memory, as well as a number of brain alterations similar to those found in Alzheimer's. The other set, SAMR1 mice, which in this study came from the same gene pool as the SAMP8 mice, age normally.

Using these mice, Maher and her colleagues addressed how T1D interacts with age to contribute to Alzheimer's-related pathology. They showed that T1D elicits a wide range of pathological changes in the brains of both strains of mice, which are exacerbated by premature aging.

The Salk study is the first to show that these modifications are similar to those seen in old nondiabetic SAMP8 mice and to identify unique pathological changes, such as increases in markers for inflammation, in aged, T1D SAMP8 mice. Unlike most mouse studies of Alzheimer's, Maher's mice were not engineered to produce high levels of human Abeta or tau,so all of their observations came from naturally occurringAbeta and tau.

Xbox SmartGlass now available in Google Play, brings console integration to Android

Hot on the heels of the Dashboard update for the Xbox 360, Microsoft's SmartGlass integration is now a reality for Android users. The companion app branches out from the earlier My Xbox Live app for Android and allows direct control of some console features from Google-powered gear. While Windows Phone users will find the tightest integration of all, the Android port still lets users steer through the Dashboard, input text, browse the web (with zooming), search for local content, and control media playback. Players can still chat with their friends and modify their Xbox profile if they're not planning to lurk around the system all day. The interface is strikingly similar to past releases (including Android) and still demands at least an 800 x 480 screen for admission -- sorry, Wildfire S fans. You'll find a full roster of features after the break, and can hit up Google Play at the source link below for your own remote.

Ga. church shooting suspect to have court hearing

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) ? The man suspected of calmly walking into a service at an Atlanta-area megachurch and gunning down a church volunteer leading a prayer was committed eight years ago to a psychiatric hospital after a violent incident in Maryland, court records show.

Police in Georgia said former church worker Floyd Palmer, 51, entered a chapel at World Changers Church International just before 10 a.m. Wednesday and opened fire, killing church volunteer Greg McDowell, 39.

"He walked in calmly, opened fire, and left as calmly," Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester said.

Palmer was a former facilities maintenance employee at the church who resigned in August for "personal reasons," Lester said.

The church's well-known founder and leader, the Rev. Creflo Dollar, was not there at the time.

Palmer was taken into custody without incident a few hours later at a Macy's at a mall in Atlanta's upscale Buckhead neighborhood, Lester said. Police spotted his black Subaru station wagon with tinted windows in the parking lot of Lenox Square. They didn't recover a weapon.

Lester said Thursday that police searched Palmer's home overnight in Riverdale, south of Atlanta. She didn't have details on what was found.

Palmer faces murder and other charges, according to online jail records. An initial court appearance for Palmer was set for Thursday morning. At the hearing, Palmer would have the opportunity to ask for bond, Fulton County sheriff's spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said.

Court records show a man named Floyd Lester Palmer, born on the same day in 1960, was charged in Baltimore in 2001 with attempted murder, assault and handgun charges. He was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2004 after pleading not criminally responsible to lesser charges. The records show he was released the next year subject to conditions that were to remain in effect for five years.

The court filings include motions by the defense for a dangerousness evaluation, which was later withdrawn.

Details of what led to the charges weren't immediately known. Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the department did not have arrest records in the case, which is not unusual in cases where someone has been committed. Palmer's attorney in the case, Kenneth Ravenell, was out of the country on Wednesday, his staff said.

About 20 to 25 people were gathered in the chapel when the shooting happened. No other people were wounded and the gunman fled.

Investigators were working to determine if Palmer and McDowell knew each other.

"We do not know if the victim was targeted," Lester said. "We are looking into that as he was the only person that was shot."

Ken Terry, a pastor at the church who is acting as a spokesman for McDowell's family, said the church family was distraught and trying to comfort McDowell's family.

"He would be considered a model dad," Terry told reporters. "To have this happen is just devastating."

Although the campus has security officers and surveillance cameras, Lester said the suspect was known to some at the service, so his presence wouldn't have been unusual.

The violence upset members and neighbors of the church, which is one of the largest in the United States, claiming 30,000 members at the main campus and a ministry of satellite churches across the country.

Along with Bishop Eddie Long, Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches.

Dollar didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press, but he preached Wednesday evening at a Bible study in the campus's larger World Dome sanctuary. He repeated the importance of having faith in God even when bad things happen and rejecting fear and doubt.

"We pray for this family," he said, referring to McDowell. "We pray for both families and then we pray for every family that's in here tonight."

Earlier Wednesday, several church members walked over to the scene after hearing about the shooting.

"It doesn't surprise me," said Adolph Hanley, 66, of College Park. "People don't want the real Word."

He said of the fatal shooting: "That's the devil's work."

"Why would anyone want to hurt the church?" he asked.

Albert Henry, 55, of Riverdale, said his 5-year-old son was in day care near the chapel when the shooting took place. He said staffers called and told him to pick up the child.

"I can't believe someone just did it in the House of the Lord," said Henry, as his boy sat in the back seat.

Linda Pritchett, 43, a church member for 10 years, said the shooting didn't make her feel less secure attending services. She said people cannot give in to fear. But she said she grieved for the victim and his family.

"When something happens to one of us, it hurts all of us," she said.

'Dynamite' Danny shares thoughts on Japeth Aguilar and the Filipino NBA dream

Exclusive Interview with "Dynamite" Danny Seigle

In light of Japeth Aguilar?s quest to make it in the NBA and the Filipino?s dream to make it in the world?s premiere basketball league, I spoke to 9-time Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) All-Star Danny Seigle - who at one point had a realistic shot at accomplishing that feat - to get his insights on the matter.

The 36-year-old, 6?6? forward enjoyed a successful college basketball career at NCAA Div. 1 school Wagner College in New York under coach Tim Capstraw, finishing sixth in the school?s all time scoring list, while averaging 19.5 points, and 5.7 rebounds per game in his final year with the Seahawks.

In this exclusive interview, Seigle shared his experiences, and offered his invaluable wisdom to Aguilar and to any aspiring Filipino who plans to shoot for the stars and make it to the NBA.

* * * * *

DG ? ?You had an impressive college career at Wagner, which is a D1 NCAA school. I'm sure you had dreams of making it to the NBA. Can you share to us if you took steps in pursuing that after college??

Danny Seigle ? ?When I finished my senior year at Wagner College, a division 1 school in New York, I was an All NEC first team, averaging 19 pts. and became the 6th all time leading scorer at Wagner having scored over 1600 points. Because of my notable stats at the Division 1 level, I attracted several different sports agencies in the US.

They brought to my attention the risks of signing up for pre-draft camps, stressing the point that they could either make you or break you. If you do not have a good showing or make a great first impression, that alone could ruin your chances.

They advised me to gain experience, put my NBA ambitions on hold, because my college stats alone was enough to secure an overseas job, having offers mostly from Europe.

The summer after my junior year, I had the opportunity to visit my older brother Andy, who was playing in the Philippine Basketball Association, and immediately was in awe of this place, the people and its culture. Needless to say I?m Filipino too, so the Philippines was an easy choice for me.

I was thinking about trying out after two pro years in the PBA, but plans got sidelined when I ruptured my Achilles. I have little regret as I am happy with my career here thus far, the relationships I made, the championships I won, the total experience has been just a complete blessing and one that I never take for granted.?

DG ? ?Compare the US and college game to the PBA.?

Danny Seigle ? ?The first thing that comes to mind when I compare the U.S. and college game to the PBA, is size, athleticism, and the quality of training which starts at a young age.

In the U.S., you are forced to develop certain skills and play at a higher level if you want to gain any advantage over your opponents, whether it?s being faster or having greater elevation along with everyday tough competition that molds you into the player you will become.

There are just far more taller, bigger athletes than there are here, and you can simply blame that on genetics! That's why they allow you to naturalize players for international competitions to somewhat level off the playing field. It's not uncommon to see a 6'6 playing the two-guard position in the US. In the PBA at that height you may find yourself playing center.?

DG ? ?In light of Japeth Aguilar's quest to make it to the NBA, can you give me an honest assessment of his chances, and things he needs to improve on to get there? What do you think about Japeth's efforts? Will this inspire future NBA aspirants, and if so, how far off do you think are Filipinos from making it to the NBA??

Danny Seigle ? ?I commend Japeth's efforts in following his dreams of making it to the NBA! By doing so, it does open doors for other aspirants that may want to follow.

We're all rooting for him.

Because of his gift of height and athleticism, there are many coaches around that may like to take on a ?potential? like Japeth, and I hope he catches someone?s eye.

Realistically, you are going up against the best talents in the world who have already established their names at big time schools or in European leagues -
very difficult, to say the least.

I tried to do a little research on how many players make it to the NBA from the Development league and its quite vague. You have so many that are sent up and sent back that its hard to pinpoint an exact number or what constitutes making it to the NBA from the D-league.

I'd like to see Japeth go to a place where he will be the focal point of a team, where he can develop the "all important" confidence needed to dominate the competition.

I extend the advice given to me by my college coach, which is to know your strengths as a player and master them. You have to specialize a role where you can stick out amongst the competition, whether it being the best shooter, the best rebounder, the best defender. Coaches are always looking for players that fit their system, so the all-around player that are just "good" at everything will not stand out as much as the players that are "great" at particular things.

We will see a full-blooded Filipino in the NBA some day, and I'm thinking it will be in the form of a guard.?

DG ? ?Who's your all-time, and current favorite NBA player and why??

Danny Seigle ? ?Larry Bird, Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan and Kevin Garnett. They all have changed the game in one way or another.?

DG ? ?Who do you think will win it all this year in the NBA? ?

Danny Seigle ? ?Since I?m a Celtic's fan, I'd like to say Boston as they will be a legit contender, but Miami is poised to repeat.?

Obama: The military also has fewer ?horses and bayonets?

After Mitt Romney went on the attack about how the Navy has fewer ships than it did in 1916, Obama countered that the military also has fewer ?horses and bayonets.?

?I think Governor Romney maybe hasn?t spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916,? Obama said. ?Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military has changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have?ships that go underwater; nuclear submarines.?

Obama added: ?And so the question is not a game of ?Battleship? where we?re counting ships. It?s: What are our capabilities??

Can your body sense future events without any external clue?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Wouldn't it be amazing if our bodies prepared us for future events that could be very important to us, even if there's no clue about what those events will be?

Presentiment without any external clues may, in fact, exist, according to new Northwestern University research that analyzes the results of 26 studies published between 1978 and 2010.

Researchers already know that our subconscious minds sometimes know more than our conscious minds. Physiological measures of subconscious arousal, for instance, tend to show up before conscious awareness that a deck of cards is stacked against us.

"What hasn't been clear is whether humans have the ability to predict future important events even without any clues as to what might happen," said Julia Mossbridge, lead author of the study and research associate in the Visual Perception, Cognition and Neuroscience Laboratory at Northwestern.

A person playing a video game at work while wearing headphones, for example, can't hear when his or her boss is coming around the corner.

"But our analysis suggests that if you were tuned into your body, you might be able to detect these anticipatory changes between two and 10 seconds beforehand and close your video game," Mossbridge said. "You might even have a chance to open that spreadsheet you were supposed to be working on. And if you were lucky, you could do all this before your boss entered the room."

This phenomenon is sometimes called "presentiment," as in "sensing the future," but Mossbridge said she and other researchers are not sure whether people are really sensing the future.

"I like to call the phenomenon 'anomalous anticipatory activity,'" she said. "The phenomenon is anomalous, some scientists argue, because we can't explain it using present-day understanding about how biology works; though explanations related to recent quantum biological findings could potentially make sense. It's anticipatory because it seems to predict future physiological changes in response to an important event without any known clues, and it's an activity because it consists of changes in the cardiopulmonary, skin and nervous systems."

The study, "Predictive Physiological Anticipation Preceding Seemingly Unpredictable Stimuli: A Meta-Analysis," is in the current edition of Frontiers in Perception Science. In addition to Mossbridge, co-authors of the study include Patrizio Tressoldi of the Universit? di Padova, Padova, Italy, and Jessica Utts of the University of California, Irvine.

Bell dealt to D-backs, who trade Young to Oakland

(AP) ? Heath Bell became the latest player jettisoned by the Miami Marlins when he was dealt Saturday to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who also acquired infielder Cliff Pennington from the Oakland for outfielder Chris Young.

Arizona obtained Pennington and minor league infielder Yordy Cabrera from Oakland for Young and cash, then sent Cabrera to the Miami Marlins for Bell. The Marlins will pay $8 million of the remaining $21 million Bell is owed.

Earlier in the day, Arizona exercised a $6.5 million option on closer J.J. Putz.

The 35-year-old Bell has 151 saves the past four seasons. He signed a $27 million, three-year contract with Miami last offseason but lost his closer's job in July. He finished with 19 saves in 27 chances and a 5.09 ERA in in 73 games.

After failing to contend in the first season of their new ballpark, the Marlins traded former NL batting champion Hanley Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July and sent pitcher Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers.

Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said Bell provides a right-handed power arm to help set up Putz and Pennington adds the team experience at shortstop and second base.

Towers, who was general manager in San Diego when Bell was the setup man for Trevor Hoffman, believes the pitcher will benefit from a return to the NL West.

"I think he's excited to kind of be able to clean the slate," Towers said.

Bell contract calls for $9 million in each of the next two seasons and includes a $9 million club option for 2015. Miami will pay $1.5 million next year, $3.5 million in 2014 and the $3 million deferred signing bonus he is owed.

Young, Arizona's center fielder for six seasons, was the odd man out in a crowded outfield with the team expecting young Adam Eaton, called up from Triple-A Reno late this season, to play center and be the Diamondbacks' leadoff hitter. But Towers said the job is automatically Eaton's. Gerardo Parra and A.J. Pollock also will compete for the spot.

Young will be reunited with Bob Melvin, who was his manager in Arizona.

"It caught me off guard a little bit, I'm not going to lie," Young said. "It's all settled in a couple hours now. I got an opportunity to talked to Billy (Beane) and got to talk to BoMel. I'm excited to help. It's a new opportunity, a fresh start for me personally."

Pennington, 28, played in 125 games for the A's. He had 93 appearances at shortstop but was shifted to second base in last August. A switch hitter, Pennington hit .215 last season, including .168 against left-handers, and had 28 RBIs.

"He had a down year. That happens. Guys have down years," Towers said. "Heath had a down year. That's why we were able to make these deals."

He said he believes Pennington can be an everyday shortstop plus fill in behind Aaron Hill at second. The team also has Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald at short.

Towers said that Bell may have been uncomfortable with his high-profile signing in the Miami makeover.

"Maybe a lot of it had to do with the pressure, his first big contract," Towers said, adding that Bell "was really the first big signing" the Marlins had in the offseason.

The Arizona general manager believes his bullpen ? led by Putz, David Hernandez, Brad Ziegler and now Bell ? "is as good a bullpen as there is if not in the National League but in baseball."

With considerable money invested in the bullpen, Towers said it's particularly important to have a strong group of relievers while Arizona's young starting rotation. He said Arizona still needs a late-inning left-handed reliever and perhaps a veteran starter.

This could be a sign Beane, the A's general manage, might try to move center fielder Coco Crisp, who signed a $14 million, two-year contract in January that includes a $7.5 million club option for 2014 with a $1 million buyout. Beane, however, said he plans to keep Crisp, though he realized there would be speculation otherwise.

" I really like our outfield," Beane said. "Everybody knows how important this guy is to this team and also has the benefit of being a personal favorite of mine."

Oakland already acquired shortstop Stephen Drew from the Diamondbacks this season and he helped them down the stretch. The A's overtook Texas on the final day of the regular season to win the AL West and returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. They lost in five games to the World Series-bound Detroit Tigers.

Beane said the day after the season ended he planned to keep his young team intact as much as possible. Last offseason, Oakland traded three top pitchers: Trevor Cahill to Arizona, Gio Gonzalez to Washington and closer Andrew Bailey to Boston.

The 29-year-old Young, a popular player in the Arizona clubhouse, has had three 20-homer, 20-steal seasons. He injured his right shoulder crashing into a wall while making a catch early this season and struggled at the plate after. A quadriceps injury in early September sent Young to the bench in favor of Eaton.

Top Facebook executive quits to join London's Tech City

LONDON (Reuters) - Joanna Shields, head of social media group Facebook's operations in Europe, is leaving to join a British government-sponsored venture to create London's answer to Silicon Valley.

Tech City Investment Organisation was set up in April 2011 to attract inward investment focused on an area in London's east End, dubbed "silicon roundabout" and supporting start-ups looking to expand.

It has signed up companies including Cisco, Google and Intel.

"The success of Tech City shows just what can happen when we back some of our most innovative and aspiring companies to grow," Prime Minister David Cameron said in a statement on Sunday.

Shields, will join TCIO in January, said she would lead a drive that hopes to make London the number one location for tech in the world.

Her departure will be a blow to Facebook, the world's biggest social network, as the U.S. group seeks to reassure shareholders after a rough reception on Wall Street since its high profile listing in May.

Concern about its slowing revenue growth rate has seen its market valuation halve - Facebook shares closed at $19.00 on Friday, compared with a $38.00 issue price in May.

"Facebook supports the UK Government's vision for building a stronger technology-based economy and start-up ecosystem, and we wish Joanna every success," a company spokesman said.

Earlier this week, Facebook opened an engineering centre in London, its first outside the United States.

(AP) ? In this tech-savvy city teeming with commuters and tourists, the cell phone has become a top target of robbers who use stealth, force and sometimes guns.

Nearly half of all robberies in San Francisco this year are cell phone-related, police say, and most occur on bustling transit lines.

One thief recently snatched a smartphone while sitting right behind his unsuspecting victim and darted out the rear of a bus in mere seconds.

Another robber grabbed an iPhone from an oblivious bus rider ? while she was still talking.

And, in nearby Oakland, City Council candidate Dan Kalb was robbed at gunpoint of his iPhone Wednesday after he attended a neighborhood anti-crime meeting.

"I thought he was going to shoot me," recalled Kalb, who had dropped his phone during the stickup. "He kept saying, 'Find the phone! Find the phone!'"

These brazen incidents are part of a ubiquitous crime wave striking coast to coast. New York City Police report that more than 40 percent of all robberies now involve cell phones. And cell phone thefts in Los Angeles, which account for more than a quarter of all the city's robberies, are up 27 percent from this time a year ago, police said.

"This is your modern-day purse snatching," said longtime San Francisco Police Capt. Joe Garrity, who began noticing the trend here about two years ago. "A lot of younger folks seem to put their entire lives on these things that don't come cheap."

Thefts of cell phones? particularly the expensive do-it-all smartphones containing everything from photos and music to private e-mails and bank account statements? are costing consumers millions of dollars and sending law enforcement agencies and wireless carriers nationwide scrambling for solutions.

In San Francisco, police have gone undercover and launched a transit ad campaign, warning folks to "be smart with your smartphone." Similar warnings went out in Oakland, where there have been nearly 1,300 cell phone robberies this year.

When Apple's ballyhooed iPhone 5 went on sale last month, New York City police encouraged buyers to register their phone's serial numbers with the department. That came just months after a 26-year-old chef at the Museum of Modern Art was killed for his iPhone while heading home to the Bronx.

In St. Louis, city leaders proposed an ambitious ordinance requiring anyone who resells cell phones to obtain a secondhand dealers license. Resellers also would need to record the phone's identity number and collect detailed information including the seller's names, addresses, a copy of their driver's licenses ? even their thumbprints.

"It will take a national solution to make this problem go away," St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said of the phone thefts.

Though some experts put annual cell phone losses in the billions of dollars, there is no precise figure on how many devices are stolen each year.

However, the problem has become so visible that it has caught the attention of lawmakers and regulators seeking to take the profit out of cell phone theft.

In April, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, and New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced that the major U.S. cell phone carriers and the Federal Communications Commission have agreed to set up a national database to track reported stolen phones. It is scheduled to launch in late 2013.

Schumer also introduced a bill called the Mobile Device Theft Deterrence Act, which proposes a five-year prison sentence for tampering with the ID numbers of a stolen cell phone. The bill is supported by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), a Washington, D.C. advocacy group.

In addition, CTIA officials said carriers are expected to launch individual databases later this month to permanently disable a cell phone reported stolen. The initiative is similar to a successful decade-old strategy in Australia.

Previously, U.S. carriers have only been able to disable so-called SIM cards, which can be swapped in and out of phones. That's led to a profitable black market for stolen phones.

Chris Guttman-McCabe, CTIA's vice president of regulatory affairs, said the goal of creating theft databases is to render stolen cell phones worthless.

"We want to dry up the aftermarket," Guttman-McCabe said. "Hopefully, there will be no sense in stealing a phone and a once valuable piece of hardware will essentially turn into useless metal."

Right now, the incentive is to steal and that's creating huge losses, said Kevin Mahaffey, a co-founder of Lookout, a San Francisco-based mobile security firm which has advised carriers about the national database.

"Thieves know that carrying a smartphone is like carrying $500 in your hands," said Mahaffey. His company estimates that stolen and lost cell phones could cost American consumers more than $30 billion this year.

Many cities with highest rates of stolen and lost phones also rank among the FBI's listing of U.S. cities with the highest crime rates, including Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland and Newark, N.J., Mahaffey said.

Meanwhile, cell phone thefts and police response continue at a frenzied pace.

In Chicago, two men were each charged with armed robbery last week after stealing an iPhone from a teen.

In Oakland, nearly three dozen people were recently arrested during a sweep for allegedly stealing smartphones. On Tuesday, police arrested 15-year-old boy who allegedly swiped a woman's iPhone near Oakland's City Hall and sold it in downtown San Francisco for $200 to buy marijuana.

"It's a quick crime of opportunity, a snatch and grab, either by foot or on bike," Officer Johnna Watson, an Oakland police spokeswoman, said. "The thieves are gone in an instant."
